GLASGOW HERALD
4 JULY 1907
COURT OF SESSION – STEVENSTON BAKER AND HIS WIFE
Proof was led before Lord Mackenzie on an action of divorce by Robert Harvie, baker, Carment Drive, Stevenston, against his wife, Jane Millgrew or Harvie, Ashgrove, 15 Montgomerie Crescent, Saltcoats.
The pursuer (thirty-three) said he married the defender in November 1894. She was a Roman Catholic and he was a Protestant, but they lived happily enough together until her family got hold of her once more. While under their influence she was antagonistic to him, and he tried to get work in Ireland but was unsuccessful.
On August 3, 1899, she came to his father’s house bringing her 3 young children, and left them there with a message that she wanted no more to do with her husband.
She refused to reconsider her decision, and he went to South Africa in 1901 and served in Baden-Powell’s Police, returning in 1902.
Efforts made by him to induce his wife to return had been unavailing. Once he visited her but got the door shut in his face without any parley.
After corroborative evidence, decree of divorce on the grounds of desertion was granted.
