GLASGOW HERALD
11 MARCH 1915
ARDROSSAN PARISH COUNCIL MEETING
Mr George Reynolds, J.P., presided at the monthly meeting on Tuesday evening last, when the recommendation of the Building Committee in connection with the defraying of the cost of the new central chambers was considered.
The estimated cost of the building is £2150, and the committee recommended the wiping off of this sum in a few years time by taking advantage of the balance in the Council’s hands, amounting to about £1000, and by avoiding bank overdraft by accepting loans for small sums at short periods during the period between the close of the year and the receipt of assessments.
The acceptance of this recommendation was moved by Mr H. Wylie Auld, who held that it was a method acceptable to the Local Government Board. Mr Gilbert Lewis seconded.
Mr McLoughlin moved a direct amendment, and Mr Currie seconded.
The motion was carried by 8 votes to 4.
Discussion took place as to the allowances to be paid to boarded-out children and the minimum amount raised from 3s 6d to 4s per week.
Mr Lewis gave notice of motion for reconsideration at the next meeting of the allowances to all the poor in view of the increased cost of living through the war crisis.
The Clerk submitted a statement regarding operation of the House Letting Act in certain parishes, notably Edinburgh, Paisley, and Glasgow, where the persons on the poor-roll had difficulty in securing exemption. On the contrary poor from those places resident in their parish were relieved without question.
