GARDEN CITY FOR STEVENSTON

At a stated meeting of the Northern District Committee of Ayrshire County Council held at Kilwinning yesterday – Colonel Sturrock, Thornton, presiding – intimation was made of the proposed formation of a garden city at Stevenston.

The announcement was made by Mr William Gray, convener of the Sub-Committee on New Buildings, who stated that a meeting of the committee had been held that morning to consider certain plans submitted on behalf of a syndicate for the erection of 244 semi-detached houses in the parish of Stevenston.

He further explained that this was only part of a larger scheme for providing 536 houses.

On the suggestion of Mr Gray it was decided to appoint a committee drawn from the Works and Public Healthy Sub-Committee to co-operate with the Stevenston Committee so that the work might go forward as quickly as possible.

HOUSING OF MINERS

A report was submitted from Mr David Andrew, the chief sanitary inspector, detailing the progress which is being made with the work of repairs on the various miners’ rows in the parishes of Irvine, Bensley, Stevenston, Kilwinning, Sourlie, Dreghorn, and Kilbirnie.

DEATH - WARNER

At 2 Percival Terrace, Brighton, Patrick Warner, of Ardeer, in his 75th year.

GLASGOW HERALD
15 MARCH 1915

DEATH OF MR PATRICK WARNER

Information was received in Stevenston on Saturday night of the death OF Mr Patrick Warner, of Ardeer, Stevenston.

The Ardeer estate came into the Warner family through the purchase by the Rev. Patrick Warner, Irvine. In recent years its value increased through the establishing of Nobel’s Explosives Factory among the sand dunes of Ardeer, the working of the coalfields and ironworks and extensive feuing.

Another scheme for the development of the estate is the formation of a garden city, which is expected to be set agoing shortly.

Mr Warner had been residing out of the district for a long period, but he retained his connection and was a generous benefactor to all local institutions.

A few years ago he presented to the town the fountain which stands in Fullarton Place, and annually he contributed coals to the poor.

While residing at Ardeer he was chairman of the Parochial Board and took an active interest in the town’s affairs.

He was highly esteemed by the people of Stevenston.
