TRIAL TOLD OF KNIFE ATTACK
Two slaughterhouse workers who accepted an invitation from a 43-year-old librarian to return to his holiday home for drinks admitted at Ayr High Court that they robbed him.
But Joseph Jackson, (21), of Arnott Place, Saltcoats, and Bernard Loughran, (26), of Wallace Road, Irvine, both denied having murdered their host, Mr John Hill MacDonald, of Caswell Close, Farnborough, Hampshire, at his flat in McIsaac Road, Saltcoats, on September 16 or 17.
The trial continues today.

TORTURE MURDER TRIAL: TWO MEN ARE JAILED FOR LIFE
The two men accused of the murder of a librarian in his flat at Saltcoats were both found guilty by a majority verdict in the High Court at Ayr today. Both were jailed for life.
The jury also found two theft charges against each man proved and Judge, Lord Dunpark, jailed them for six months on each of these charges.
Joseph Jackson, (21), slaughterhouse worker, of 3 Arnott Place, Saltcoats, and fellow slaughterhouse labourer Bernard Loughran, (26), of 6 Wallace Road, Irvine, denied the murder of John Hill MacDonald, of 3 Caswell Close, Farnborough, Hampshire, in his holiday flat at 1 McIsaac Road, Saltcoats, on September 16 or 17.

The man who was discovered in the back court at 410 Argyle Street, Glasgow, on Saturday night with his skull fractured died in the Royal Infirmary last night.
He was identified as James Mackenzie, 25 years of age, plumber, 17 Union Street, Saltcoats.

DEATH IN GLASGOW

To further recruiting a public meeting was held last night in Saltcoats Town Hall.
Ex-Provost Millar presided.
Sir James Bell of Montgreenan, chairman of Ayrshire Territorial Forces Association, spoke of the importance of the fight in which the Empire was engaged, and made an earnest appeal to young men to join the Army.
