Ending 1859 by despoiling the peerage of coronet, and ushering in 1860 by taking from the ranks of statesmanship one of its most useful ornaments, the relentless scythe-bearer pursues his journey apace, and, entering the walk of science, has now taken away one whose life has been wisely and practically spent in the service of his country and astronomical science. General Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, Bart., of Brisbane and Makerstoun, as was announced in our Saturday's second edition, has gone to his rest, having died at his mansion of Brisbane, in Ayrshire, on Friday morning. Beginning life's work at an early age, his history contains a lesson which might profitably be read by many upon whom "lavish honours showers her stores," as well as by those even in the humbler walks of life. The deceased entered the army as an ensign in 1790; industry and perseverance raised him step by step in his position, till he occupied a prominent place among the great and eminent officers of the early part of the century; while during his whole career as an officer, his devotion to science, especially that of astronomy, has never slept, his researches and discoveries rendering his fame worldwide. In the year above mentioned, 1790, he joined the 38th Regiment as an ensign, and on the breaking out of the war in 1793, was promoted to the post of captain of the 53rd, with which he joined the Duke of York in Flanders, and took part in the campaigns of that general, among the seiges [sic] and actions at which he was present being that of Tournay, in which he was wounded. Returning to England, with his regiment in 1795, he obtained a majority by purchase, and in the same year accompanied Sir Ralph Abercrombie in the West Indian expedition. Taking part in almost all actions of that war, he returned to England in 1805, having, during his absence, risen to the Lieut.-Colonelcy of his regiment. Having been obliged, on account of severe liver complaint, to retire on half-pay on his regiment being ordered out to India, he served two years as Adjutant-General in the Kent district, and in 1812 proceeded to the Peninsula, where he received the command of a brigade of the Duke of Wellington's army. In almost all the battles in Spain he took part, and received a cross and one clasp for Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes [sic], and Toulouse, where he was again wounded, and for the part he took in the battle of Orthes had the honour of receiving the thanks of the Parliament. In 1814 he was ordered to America, and while there received the Grand Cross of the Bath. In the following year, 1815, he was recalled, and after the battle of Waterloo joined the Duke's army in Paris. During the whole period that the allies occupied French soil Sir Thomas remained in France, and while there was unanimously elected corresponding member in the Institute of France. In 1820 he was appointed to the Staff [?] in Ireland, and in the same year received the appointment of Governor of New South Wales, on which occasion he had the freedom of the city of Cork conferred upon him. During his residence in New South Wales he did much to make himself "loved at home and revered abroad". Commencing his reign by freeing the press from the shackles of censorship under which it had previously groaned, he laid the world of science under a deep debt to him by the erection at his own expense of an observatory at Paramatta [sic], which, with a liberality as rare as it was estimable, he presented to the British Government. For the long catalogue of southern stars, and for almost all the knowledge of the condition of the southern skies, astronomers are indebted to Sir Thomas Brisbane. Honours now seem to have flown in upon Sir Thomas, for in 1824 the University of Edinburgh conferred on him the degree of LL. D., and on his return from New South Wales in 1825 he was appointed Colonel of the 34th Regiment. Not satisfied with the obligations under which he had already laid his country, he built another observatory at his seat of Makerstoun, on the banks of the Tweed, furnishing it with special reference to the pursuit of magnetic and meteorological researches. Speaking of his studies here, the late Professor Nichol, a kindred spirit, says, that by means of them was established unquestionably for the first time the existence of a magnetic irregularity dependent on the periods of the moon. In 1828 he was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Astronomical Society; and in 1831 he became a Knight Grand Cross of the Guelphs of Hanover. In 1832 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford, and during the same year was elected President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1833 he received the degree of A.M. at Cambridge when he was nominated President of the British Association. In 1836, he was created a baronet of the United Kingdom; in 1837, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath; and, in 1841, he became a General in the army. Added to these numerous honours, he was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. Besides the monuments to his fame which, as mentioned above, he himself erected, he aided by his counsel, exertions, and pecuniary assistance, the establishment of many observatories at home and abroad—as in Glasgow, Cape of Good Hope, and other places; and very recently he presented the Edinburgh Observatory with a fine clock.
He had a curious predilection for examining remarkable clocks, and while others rested from the fatigue of march and battle, Sir Thomas was often in the habit of visiting any of these instruments that might be within reach of the camp. This propensity got him the soubriquet of "Tom Pendulum" from the Duke of Wellington, and the following anecdote is related to him:—"When the army was in Strasburg, Sir Thomas was on one occasion wanted, and some one asked the Duke if he was away on business, or where he was likely to be found. Wellington replied that he did not know, adding immediately, however, "By the bye, there is a remarkable clock hereabouts, I believe—depend upon it, he is there"; and there he was! He could boast of what very few military men could, viz., that he had circumnavigated the globe, that he had crossed the tropics twelve times, and the equinoctial line twice. Passing the later years of his well-spent life at his estates of Brisbane and Makerstoun, his attention to the welfare of those more immediately around him never slept, as is abundantly testified by the fine school-house which he recently built and endowed at Largs at a considerable outlay. "His interest in the progress of knowledge," says the late Professor Nichol, "has never wavered nor diminished; applied to on behalf of any good and unobtainable object, he is ever ready to aid by his purse and by his influence. He long occupied the chair of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and is worthily fulfilling a varied life whose long and honoured course was never approached by the shadow of a stain".
Sir Thomas was descended from a long line of distinguished ancestors—one of the earliest of the family known in history being supposed to have been William Brisbane, who in 1332 was Chancellor of Scotland. Matthew Brisbane, of Bishoptown, one of the family estates, fell at Flodden in 1513; and his nephew, who succeeded to the estates, was also slain at the battle of Pinkie in 1547. The more immediate ancestors of Sir Thomas were all distinguished as men who spent the greater part of their lives in the service of their country. In 1816 Sir Thomas married the daughter of Sir Henry Hay Makdougall, Bart., of Makerstoun, a kinsman of Sir Walter Scott, by whom he had two sons and two daughters, all of whom have gone to their rest before him. In 1826 Sir Thomas and his wife were authorised by sign manual to use the surname of Makdougall before that of Brisbane. Sir Thomas is succeeded to the Baronetcy by a nephew, son of the late Admiral Brisbane.
