Re: Stevenston Church ministers 1740s
In answer to the question about why Robert "Cunningham" Reid took this name, it is my understanding that Anna Cunninghame was the eldest of the 4 Cunninghame children and her only brother Robert Cunninghame died (1717-1733) leaving her as the Cunninghame heiress Anna then married John Reid in Stevenston in June 25 1737. Their son Robert, born in Stevenston in 1744 became "the Cunninghame" - as a result.

Re: Stevenston Church ministers 1740s
I have just received information on Rev. William Reid's grandson, Dr. John Reid 1754-1810.
This was in a manuscript in The State Library in Melbourne, Australia Notes made by Mrs Haig (nee Christian Learmonth). widow of General Felix Haig. Addressed to her sons & nephews
"Reid: My Grandmothers maiden name was ELIZABETH REID. She had a brother JOHN REID, who when he was a medical student in Edinburgh was fascinated by the new ideas of social equality which at the time of the French Revolution (1790-1800) were seething in many minds. These ideas, which to a large extent have since been generally adopted, were at that time thought most dangerous. John Reid got into serious trouble on account of them, and was obliged to leave the country to avoid being put into prison. He went to Calcutta and there began to practice as a doctor. Doc tors were few and he made a fortune. His sons afterwards rose to high positions under the Indian Government. One of them, Lestock Reid was your Aunt Katherine's Father"
This opens up the option to search in Edinburgh for info on John's medical training and a possible court case.

Hello,
I am descended from Sarah, daughter of Thomas Reid and Elizabeth Boyd. Sarah married James M'Call on 27 Jan 1761.
I have only just discovered this family and am excited to know there are others from the same line.

Sarah,
hello distant cousin. It's good to hear from you.
I am descended from John (1711-?) Thomas' younger brother. Do you have any details on the early years concerning Thomas and his business or about any earlier ancestors? I also know very little about John and what he did in life. One account has it that he was a minister like his father William...but where and for how long? He did not take over from William in Stevenston.
yours,
Martin Reid

Perhaps they liked the name ??? Cunningham Reid (1785) is my maternal great, great, great grandfather. I live in St. Louis, Missouri USA which is where Edward C Reid (descendant of Cunningham) lived. Any information on the Reids of Ayrshire would be welcomed.sweet caroline wrote:Hi All,So what gave John Reid and Jean Hamilton the right to call son Cunninghame Reid 29.6.1785 Stevenston

Is anyone around related to John Reid 1711 Saltcoats? I recently got my big y results back and he would be one of my grandfathers. I myself live in the states.
