GLASGOW HERALD
8 July 1912
COURT OF SESSION – BEFORE LORD HUNTER – AN ARDROSSAN ACCIDENT
The trial concluded of the action in which George Cruikshanks, fireman, 37 Clyde Street, Anderston, Glasgow, sued Ardrossan Harbour Company for £500 damages in respect of personal injuries.
While the pursuer, in December, 1911, was walking along the east side of Eglinton Dock, Ardrossan Harbour, he fell into the well of a coal hoist, the property of the defenders, and received serious injuries.
The pursuer alleges that the platform had been raised, and that the well was unprotected and insufficiently lighted, the night being a dark one.
The defenders denied liability, and explained that in making for his ship the pursuer should have avoided the hoist. They said they took all usual and necessary precautions for protecting, lighting, and working the hoist. It was, they said, impracticable to do more than was at present done to protect the well of the hoist while it was in use. They pleaded contributory negligence.
The jury, after an absence of 15 minutes, returned a unanimous verdict for the defenders.

GLASGOW HERALD
10 JULY 1846
THE NEW ARDROSSAN SHEEP AND WOOL TRYST
The first of these markets, which are likely in succeeding years to be regarded as of deep interest and importance, was held at Ardrossan on Monday and Tuesday last, the 6th and 7th current.
The July meeting is intended to be what is termed a “character market” – that is, where stock or wool itself is not brought forward, but where purchases are made from the knowledge which the buyer already possesses, or has just obtained, of the character of the sheep produced on a certain given farm or district. This is the system pursued at the great market which has been long established at Inverness, which, in point of time, the Ardrossan meeting is intended immediately to precede, so that buyers and sellers will thus have two strings to their bow.

GLASGOW HERALD
10 JULY 1911
HOLIDAY RESORT – ARDROSSAN
The heat wave has now reached Ardrossan, and for two days the place has been exceptionally warm. There have never been more people in the town during July, and the season generally promises to create a record. The sand-building competition and sports for children which took place on Saturday were a great success, over 200 children taking part. Bathing and boating are very popular, and the evening cruises are much patronised. The Isle of Man, Portrush, and Belfast steamers are doing well. Weather prospects excellent.
