FIRE AT ARDROSSAN OILSKIN WORKS

A serious fire occurred in Ardrossan yesterday forenoon, completely destroying the premises of the Ardrossan Oilskin Manufacturing Company, and involving a loss of over £1000.

The building contained a large number of waterproofs and oilskins, as well as several barrels of linseed oil.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Owing to the inflammable nature of the material the fire spread rapidly, and in a few minutes the flames enveloped the whole building, so that it was impossible to save more than a small quantity of the stock.

Water was poured into the building from all sides, but the fire was not subdued until the roof and the whole of the interior were destroyed, and only the walls left standing.

A good many workers, mostly girls, will be thrown out of employment. One girl, named Mary Ramsay, was badly burned about the face and arms.

EPISCOPAL HOME MISSIONS

On Wednesday afternoon a sale of work was held in the hall of St. Andrews’s Episcopal Church, Ardrossan, in aid of the Home Mission work of the church.

The Countess of Glasgow, in declaring the sale open, referred to the growth in the demand of the Home Mission work. In their district the great influx of workers from England in connection with the new shipbuilding yards, and the fact that Ardrossan was now an important naval station, meant a great increase in the number of Episcopalians for whom they had to provide.

The proceeds of the sale were to go towards the expense incurred in getting the services of a curate to assist the Rev. A. Copland in his increased work in connection with the congregation.

The sum realised was about £30.
