DYNAMITE WORKERS’ DEMANDS

Last night a meeting of Nobel’s dynamite workers resident in Kilwinning was held in the Temperance Hall, Kilwinning, to hear a report arising out of the recent conference between the management and the officials of the recently formed Union.

Mr Gilbert Lewis, president of the Ardrossan Branch intimated that the membership of the union had grown to 1600. He repeated the terms which had been submitted to the management of Nobel’s works at a conference, and said he expected to have been able to make a definite statement as to the outcome, but this had been postponed.

He read a letter from Sir Frederick Nathan, the works manager, that morning, intimating that the workers requests had been laid before the board of the company. The men’s representatives had been invited to a further discussion on the subject. Mr Lewis announced that they had accepted the invitation, and hoped to have their requests confirmed at the meeting.

He added that it was proposed also to organise the girls employed in Nobel’s factory, and he understood between 500 and 600 girls had already joined. A meeting in furtherance of that object would be held next week to organise the girls finally and draw up the demands to be submitted to the management on their behalf.

KILWINNING AND STEVENSTON FARMERS’ SOCIETY

The annual show of cattle and horses under the auspices of Kilwinning and Stevenston Farmers’ Society was held yesterday at Meadowbank, Kilwinning. The weather conditions were ideal, and while the cattle section showed a slight decrease in entries this was more than compensated for by the splendid turnout of horse.

The annual show of cattle and horses was held at Meadowbank, Kilwinning, in stormy weather.

In the afternoon the conditions improved considerably, and there was a record attendance of visitors.

This year the society had added considerably to its large store of special prizes, and entries in nearly all the classes were satisfactory.

DYNAMITE WORKERS’ DEMANDS

A meeting of the newly formed branch of the Scottish Federation in connection with Messrs Nobel’s Explosives Works was held last night in the Town Hall, Saltcoats.

Mr Gilbert Lewis presided and there was an attendance of about 1000.

Mr Lewis intimated that he had a conference with the directors of the company, and had put forward a request for a minimum wage of 23s for the labourers, an increase of 3s per week to the other workers, and double time for Sunday work.

The directors, after considering the request, offered to give the labourers an increase of 2s 1d per week, raising the wage from 18s 9d to 20s 10d. They desired to discriminate with regard to which departments should receive the increases of 3s, and they agreed to give double time for special Sunday work, but could not accede to the request in cases where Sunday labour was part of the week’s work.

He had refused to accept these conditions on the part of the workers, and asked the meeting to approve or disapprove of his action.

The question of whether they were prepared to strike in the event of a further request for the original demand being refused was put to the meeting, and by a unanimous vote it was decided to stop work if the directors adhered to their present position.
