SEAMAN DROWNED

On Tuesday evening last, John Murphy, one of the firemen on the GLOWWORM steamer, in attempting to go on board that vessel in Ardrossan Harbour, owing to the darkness of the night, and the gangway having been removed from the position it was in during the day at the time he left the ship on some errands to the town, unfortunately missed his footing, and fell into the water.

The night watchman promptly came to his assistance, but when got out the vital spark had fled. A surgeon was also early in attendance.

He left a widow but no family.

THE OUTRAGE IN THE BRIDGEGATE AT GLASGOW

During Sunday the police were upon the alert to find a clue to the hiding place of Daly, who is accused of the murder of David Love, but without success.

On Monday morning, however, Inspector McKay, along with criminal officer Hughes, left Glasgow by the half-past seven o’clock train for Ardrossan, suspecting that Daly might sail from that port for Ireland.

When the train had arrived at Beith Station, Hughes, in looking out of the carriage window, observed the person of whom they were in pursuit emerging from the station-house, and entering a third-class carriage. The officers immediately followed, and had Daly taken into the station-house where he was detained till the arrival of the up-train, when he was conveyed to Glasgow.

It is rumoured that Daly was seen at the foot of Saltmarket Street late on Sunday night, and the supposition is that he had afterwards walked to Beith. He had taken out a ticket for Ardrossan, there can be no doubt with the intention of proceeding from thence by the Belfast boat for Ireland.

An investigation into the facts of the case took place on Monday, and Daly has been committed.

We learn that the result of the post-mortem examination of the body is, that death was caused by extensive injury of the brain, proceeding there is little doubt, from the blow.

[This article refers to James Daly, an Irishman, aged between 35 and 40 years, who was alleged to have inflicted a fatal punch on David Love, aged 53 years, a weaver, who lived in Tureen Street, Glasgow, and who left a widow, and three children.]

A serious motor accident occurred near Ardrossan yesterday evening.

All the occupants were more or less bruised, and Mr John Derry, who was rendered unconscious, was afterwards found to have sustained a severe skull fracture. Mr Derry is a Glasgow publican.

TESTIMONIAL

A large number of the friends of Mr Park, Parochial Schoolmaster of Ardrossan, invited that gentleman to a supper in the house of Mr John Orr, inn-keeper, Saltcoats, on Friday evening the 1st instant.

The chair was ably filled by the Rev. James Elles. Mr Alexander Campbell acted as croupier.

Mr Elles read a letter of apology from the Rev. Mr Bryce, minister of the parish.

The loyal and constitutional toasts having been given, the chairman in his usual happy and eloquent manner, and in language highly complimentary, proposed the health of Mr Park, who, in a very few years residence, had procured the respect of all classes of the community.

The chairman then, in the name of the subscribers, presented Mr Park with a splendid silver snuff box, bearing the inscription, “Presented to Mr James Park by a numerous circle of friends in Saltcoats and Ardrossan, as a mark of their esteem, and in approbation of his public services.”

The box was accompanied with a massive gold watch guard, both purchased from Mr John Findlay & Company, jewellers, Glasgow.
