Fatal Accident
[From the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald, 30/07/1859]
Last week we briefly recorded the sudden death of Mr James Young, so well known in Ardrossan by his connection with the Royal Bank here. He had gone to spend a few weeks among his friends in Upper Peeblesshire, previous to entering upon another engagement. Whilst looking at a portable threshing machine at work on the farm of his uncle, he inadvertently got his foot caught by the drum or beater, and before it could be disentangled from it, his right leg, below the knee, was shattered in a most frightful manner. Medical aid was got with the utmost speed—two surgeons at once declared that amputation of the limb was necessary, but human aid proved of no avail; the young man gradually sunk under it, principally owing to the shock his nervous system had sustained, and he breathed his last about four and a half hours after the accident, and two hours after the operation. He was much liked here, and his death will be regretted by many.

Melancholy Occurrence at the Coast—Two Young Men Drowned.
Last week witnessed one of those melancholy cases which, one would almost be inclined to think, happen periodically to throw a gloom over a community in general, and a few families in particular. On Tuesday forenoon two young men, belonging to Glasgow, left Dunoon, where they had been residing for a short time, for Gourock, in the Hero yacht, of three tons, belonging to Mr Russell, Dunoon. The trip to Gourock passed off agreeably, and at the place of their destination they spent the day as happily as possible. In the evening they set out on their homeward voyage to Dunoon, but this time a gale was blowing, and they were obliged to put back to Gourock. Having, however, been very desirous of returning home that evening as their absence might have caused uneasiness to their friends at Dunoon, they, after a short interval, although in direct opposition to the advice of parties at Gourock, again set out, this time in the direction of Kilcreggan; but, melancholy to say, they never arrived at their destined haven, the yacht having, it is supposed, gone down about half a mile off Ashton, carrying with it the two unfortunate young men. The sad occurrence was not, so far as we have learned, seen by human eye, but it is the only way in which their long absence can be accounted for. The names of the young men who have thus met an untimely fate are: —Mr John Beattie, aged 26 years, son of Mr John Beattie, of John Beattie & Co., sugar merchants in Virginia Street, and Mr A. Cairns, of the age of 23 years, of the firm of J. & A. Cairns, clothiers, Trongate. Their sudden and untimely death is mourned by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.
