All the films showing at the Countess this week are golden oldies, and every one of them worth seeing. " Little Women ", starring Janet Leigh, Peter Lawford, Elizabeth Taylor and Rossano Brazzi, is showing with " The Student Prince " which features the singing voice of Mario Lanza. Comedy is showing on Wednesday ; " Seven Brides for Seven Brothers " is a musical comedy about seven brothers and their attempts to get wives to do all the work. Things don't turn out quite the way they expected. On Friday and Saturday the film is " Quo Vadis " , which is a spectacular version of the classic story by Sienkiwicz about the court of Nero, the persecution of the Christians, and the leadership of Peter.

Next week's films at the Countess are old favourites - the programme having been chosen by the present lessee Mrs Paterson, to commemorate the fact that the cinema has been managed by her family for 50 years. Her father, Mr Buchanan Thomson, was granted the lease by Saltcoats Town Council in November 1921 and on his death his wife Mrs Marion Thomson continued the management of the hall.

" Mutiny on the Bounty " ( all week ) tells the story of the epic voyage made by Captain Bligh and a handful of his men after the crew mutiny on his ship " HMS Bounty ". The mutiny is caused by the cruelty of Captain Bligh to his crew while the ship is doing a horticultural survey in the South Pacific. The mate, Fletcher Christian, leads a revolt and the crew sail in the ship to Pitcairn Island where they founded a colony. It stars Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard and Richard Harris.

A high tension thriller " Assault ( Monday to Wednesday ) stars Suzy Kendall and Frank Finlay. It is showing with " Subterfuge " starring Gene Barry. A classic story, " Jane Eyre ", by Charlotte Bronte, returns to the screen in a new version of the film from Thursday to Saturday. Susannah York and George C Scott are the stars. The film traces Jane's unhappy existence in the home of her relations and the school she is sent to until she finally thinks she can forget all this when she is to be married to Mr Rochester, whom she works for as a governess.

Saltcoats People Injured in Train Crash
Several people were slightly injured when the ?.5 train from Largs slipped on the line at St. Enoch Station, Glasgow, Wednesday morning and crashed into the buffers at the end of the platform. A number passengers suffered from shock, while others were taken to the Royal Infirmary for treatment. Those included Mrs Martin (67), 35 Kerr Avenue, Saltcoats; Mary Jamieson (41), 73 Manse Street, Saltcoats; John Ayres (22), 5 Bute Terrace, Saltcoats; Mrs McGrieve (53), 31 Raise Street, Saltcoats; and, Mrs Thom (50), Cupancraig, High Road, Stevenston.

Speaking to Mr. Harry Kemp the other day, found him, as usual, all smiles, and well pleased with the business done at his hall, La Scala. The picture portion of Mr. Kemp's programme is always good, and at present it includes two serials, "Peg o' the Ring" and "The Diamond From the Sky." The feature this week is "An American's Home."
At the Countess Cinema, where Miss D. A. Kingsbury holds the managerial ribbons, the programmes are always excellent, and the fare this lady is submitting this week embraces "The Scarlet Sin," "Sonny Jim," and "Hard Times," and there should be no hard times with such fare-

Ardrossan.
The Crown at Ardrossan believes in serials, and at present three are running, and a fourth is announced. The three which are pleasing patrons at present are "The Million Dollar Mystery," The Girl of Lost Island," and "Peg o' the Ring," while "The Perils of Pauline" are announced as "coming soon."

Stevenston.
The newly opened house at Stevenston has proved that its first programme was not an extra special for the opening week, for this week's is just as good, and the star for the following week even better. This week Stevenstonians are having "Tessibel of the Storm Country," Triangle Comedy; "Maud," and "The French Offensive at Salonica." Next week the tit-bit is Martin Harvey in "The Broken Melody."

“The Crown at Ardrossan” first I’ve heard of such a place like PT says “every day is a school day”

Wonder where the Crown was located. Is it possible it was the same location as the Lyric?

In the ' History of Three Towns Picture Houses ' , posted here , the Crown gets a mention as one of the first cinemas in Ardrossan, but it states that it's not known where it was, except that it may have been in the Assembly Hall in Bute Place.

PS I've now discovered in a later post in the same topic that in fact it was the cinema that was in Bute Place ; see here.

SALTCOATS WELCOMES GAS LIGHT

On Wednesday night the town of Saltcoats was lighted with gas for the first time; and in consequence of the novelty of the circumstances the bells were set a ringing and numerous parties of the working classes paraded the streets proceeded by bands of music.

Saltcoats' Oldest
The death of Robert Coupar Wilkie, principal of the well- known grocery and provision store in Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, took place on Monday. At 83, the late Mr Wilkie was Saltcoats' oldest merchant. He was a former member of Saltcoats Town Council and served as a magistrate.

THE NEW YEAR - SALTCOATS

The children attending the Sunday schools of the Established and Free Churches had their usual treat. A short service was held by the two United Presbyterian congregations in the West U.P. Church at noon.

The annual dinner took place in the Mission Coast Home – Mr William Bryden in the chair. About 150 sat down to dinner, including inmates, friends, and officials. Addresses were given by the chairman, Rev. Mr Greenhill, and others. In the course of the meeting, it was mentioned that the number of inmates in the Home during the nineteen years of its existence averaged 700 annually, and during the same period the income averaged £1000 per year. During the past year 3000 people came to the home for advice. A choir led by Mr R. Barbour sang several hymns.

THE NEW YEAR - SALTCOATS

In the churches on Hogmanay musical services were held, and in the parish church there was a watchnight service. The New Year was welcomed with ringing of bells and firing of rockets.

Yesterday free breakfasts were given to the poor; a united service was held in the Landsborough Church; two football matches were played; midday and evening performances were given in the Pavilion; the League of the Cross had a concert and dance; and in the Town Hall the annual temperance festival took place. There were any visitors to the town. Licensed premises were closed all day, and shops and business premises were shut in the afternoon. The golf course was crowded with players. The weather was fine, though dull.
