Ardrossan Princes Street

Post by glenshena »

Some clever artist has painted this mural on the corner of Princes Street and Glasgow Street. You can make out the Waverly and Ardrossan Castle.

The ship isn’t the Waverley, Bonzo, but the Laird’s Isle that sailed daily between Ardrossan and Belfast from the 1930s to the 1950s apart from during the war. The radio mast commemorates the first shortwave radio signal to be sent from America to the United Kingdom. It was received on the North Shore in 1921 by a man called Paul Godley. HMS Dasher, that sank off Ardrossan 1943, is also featured. A bowl represents Ardrossan’s two bowling clubs. The train signifies that Ardrossan once had five stations. The aeroplane symbolises Janet Hendry, Scotland’s first registered female pilot who was born in Ardrossan in 1906. The two sea creatures are a jellyfish and a seal – wearing a Winton Rovers jersey.

Thanks Ian. I have never heard of him. Born in Irvine! What a peculiar name, Tragic.
