All Set For 'Highland'

The streets of the new Burgh of Stevenston will present a colourful spectacle to-morrow (Saturday) when the Pipes and Drums of twenty-three bands play at intervals from Moorpark Road West to the Ardeer Recreation Ground on the occasion of the Highland Gathering being run by the Ayrshire Branch of the Scottish Pipe Band Association in conjunction with the local District Council.

Arrangements for the gathering are complete and it is confidently expected that given favourable weather conditions the success of previous ventures will be surpassed.

Brighter Stevenston

Things are certainly brightening up Stevenston way.... It seems as if the new garden plot at the Square, now in full bloom and complete with seats, is to have a counter-part on the opposite side of Schoolwell Brae. There the unsightly hoardings have been removed giving a clear view of the approaches to the High Kirk.

Then a number of County Council representatives have been seen inspecting the neighbourhood of the old bridge at the Cross, so maybe it won't be there so much longer.

Down by the shore work is progressing on the new road way to the kiosk. An ultra-modern mower has been cutting the straggling grass in the neighbourhood and the kiosk itself is the more attractive by a fresh coating of paint.

Brightening the lives of those living in the newer parts of the scheme is the extension to the local 'bus service by way of Hayocks Road and Greenhead Avenue. The extended service started last Sunday and the extent to which it has been patronised since is indicative of the need which the extended service is meeting.

Stevenston Topics

The Auld Brig.
The site for the much talked of new lavatory to replace the obsolete erection at the Auld Brig has agreed upon. It will be situated near to the Y.M.C.A. building at the Cross. This was generally agreed at a meeting of the local county councillors and county council offcials held recently at the site. The county planning officer had previously stated that his committee were not concerned with where this lavatory should be, and that the county council contribution was limited to £200, representing the estimated cost of replacing the existing lavatory.

Not Satisfied.
Further complaints lodged with Saltcoats Town Council with regard to nuisances caused by their coup and by floating sewage on the shore, the town clerk stated in a letter to the District Council that close observation was being kept and every endeavour made to obviate the causes of the complaints, and that so far as sewage was concerned, it had only been observed once recently at the East Shore. The Local committee have now instructed the clerk to write to the town clerk stating that they are not satisfied with the reply and are taking the matter up with the county sanitary inspector.

Not Complete.
In connection with the pavement at Townhead Street the county surveyor has stated that the work already done has involved ground which belongs to the county council. Continuation of this footpath is dependent upon getting ground from the next proprietor with whom negotiations have not yet been completed.

New Street Widening.
Rev. J. Mackay Nimmo indicated at Monday's meeting of the District Council that removal of the wall at Livingstone Manse could be proceeded with without waiting for the rest of the New Street widening scheme to be put into operation, Mr W. Small said in reply that the work was allowed for in this year's estimates and that it should be done before next May.

Train Holds Up bus
The cause of buses being held up for seventeen minutes at the level crossing on Sunday 28th August was the passing through of a special train carrying trippers to Saltcoats and Ardrossan, says the A.1. bus company in reply to a complaint from the District Council. The bus company are taking the matter up with the railway authorities with a view to getting an explanation.

No Island.
There will be no street island formed at the junction of Moorpark Road West and New Street. The county surveyor has given as his opinion that the area is not large enough.

Going to the Dogs.
Tenants in Boglemart Street have been complaining that on the nights the dog racing track is lit up their household lights go down and wireless sets become almost inaudible. The District Council are drawing the attention of the electricity authority to the matter.

Goal posts
The football pitch at the foreshore which is much used by Youth Clubs may soon have the goalposts fitted with nets. The local committee are taking steps to have iron stanchions fixed for the purpose.

Right of way.
The right of way to the Ardeer shore has been cut off to the public by the erection of a fence by the I.C.I. between its property and that of the County Council. Access is now only available by means of the sand and then only at low tide. The I.C.I. are to be asked to meet representatives of the District Council on the question.
