CASUALTY OF WAR
27 OCTOBER 1916

Died on service, Gunner WILLIAM HARVIE McCALLUM, Service No. 169599, Royal Horse Artillery – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of Alexander and Mary McCallum, 50 Wellpark Road, Saltcoats; brother of Annie, and brother-in-law of Alexander Lee.

A temperance demonstration was held under the auspices of the Saltcoats Temperance Union in the Town Hall last night - Rev. David Greenhill presiding.

Mr KEIR HARDIE, M.P., was the principal speaker.

At Rothesay, on the 26th instant, Mr Robert Burns, aged 36 years, son of Mr William Burns, chemist, Saltcoats.

GLASGOW HERALD
30 OCTOBER 1880

SENT TO REFORMATORY

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday JAMES ALLAN, son of a labourer residing in Quay Street, Saltcoats, pleaded guilty to the theft of a pocket-knife and a box of cigarettes from a shop there on the 28th instant, and was sentenced to ten days' imprisonment, and thereafter to be incarcerated for three years in Stranraer Reformatory.

CASUALTY OF WAR
30 OCTOBER 1918

Died on service of pneumonia, Sapper WILLIAM CAMPBELL, (26), Corps of Royal Engineers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – brother of Mrs William Russell, Rockyknowe, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Sapper William Campbell, R.E., who has died of pneumonia, was a brother of Mrs William Russell, Rockyknowe, Saltcoats. He was a native of Kilwinning, and a son of the late Mr Joseph Campbell, Eglinton Iron Works. He enlisted at the outbreak of the war, and has been in France all the time.

Prior to the war he had worked for two years at Eglinton Iron Works, Kilwinning, and was well known there.

He was home three times on leave."

Does anyone know where Rockyknowe was (is) ?

We've had some discussion of this before, Scott; you yourself marked where you thought it was on this map :

But if it was there, it must also have originally referred to a wider area, because there's a post here which stated that Saltcoats Victoria used to have Rockyknowe Park for a ground, but the council took it for housing in 1936.

Died on service, Driver ROBERT DICKSON, (24), Royal Field Artillery – Theatre of war, Palestine – enlisted at Ardrossan; son of Mrs Fanny H. Hutton, 138 Moncur Street, Calton, Glasgow; living c/o William McMillan, 6 Springvale Street, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Word has been received in Saltcoats of the death of Driver Robert Dickson, R.F.A., in Palestine, of malaria fever, after four years’ service.

Driver Dickson was 24 years ogf age, and was educated at Kyleshill School.

Before joining up he was employed in Nobel’s factory, and resided with Mr McMillan, 6 Springvale Street, Saltcoats.”

MUNICIPAL ELECTION NOMINATIONS

Saltcoats:
For four vacancies there were only two nominations, viz: - William Mather, Bayview Cottage, Ardrossan Road; and Robert Blakely, laundry proprietor, Winton Circus.

Those nominated will be declared elected, but a new election will be necessary to fill up the two remaining vacancies.
