SEVERE STORM - ARDROSSAN

One of the most violent storms experienced here for a long time raged between midnight and daybreak yesterday morning, reaching its height about three o'clock.

A perfect gale blew from the south-west, accompanied by unusually heavy hail showers and vivid flashes of lightning. Many people were awakened from their slumbers by the fury of the storm, but we have heard of no damage which has resulted.

Though the storm had considerably abated yesterday, the wind continued very high with frequent showers of hail and rain.

LEASE OF THE MINERALS IN THE BARONY OF ARDROSSAN

The Earl of Eglinton and Winton has just now granted a lease of the minerals in his Barony of Ardrossan to the Messrs Baird of the Gartsherrie and Eglinton Ironworks.

The Ardrossan Barony contains about 3500 acres, and extends from the towns of Saltcoats and Ardrossan, with some slight interruptions, to Dalry parish, and within a mile of that town.

Mineralogists consider, we understand, that there is a likelihood the barony will contain both coal and ironstone.

Judging from the opulence and enterprise, with the scientific and practical skill of the lessees, there is a probability that the transaction will be beneficial to both parties.

FATAL ACCIDENT – ARDROSSAN

Another of these fatal accidents which have been so common here of late occurred on the night of Monday last.

The captain of the schooner EXPERIENCE, at present lying in the dock, returned from the town in company with his wife, betwixt ten and eleven o’clock. In attempting to get on board of his vessel, both fell into the water, and although he was promptly rescued, twenty minutes elapsed before she was got out, and all efforts to restore animation proved fruitless.

His wife had come over from Belfast, per FIREFLY steamer, a few hours previous to the accident, and her corpse was returned with it next day.

This is the fourth fatal accident that has occurred here within four weeks.

DETAILS OF THE STORM

Ardrossan:
The steel built barque HIROTHA broke away from her moorings at the south-west side of the dock, where she was being fitted and finished, and coming in contact with other craft sent them adrift with her.

The JESSIE, of Dundalk, had her mizzenmast carried away and her side damaged.

The smack CATHERINE STEVENSON drove across the bows of the NORAH CAINE, and sank.

The NORAH CAINE had her bowsprit broken.

The bell buoy at the new harbour works also broke adrift and was driven up the north beach.

The Belfast boat was delayed till yesterday morning, and the Arran steamboat service was suspended.
