The officers’ returns were read, showing the following results: -

In Ardrossan the number of children of school age was 755, and in Saltcoats 690. Of these 721 and 688 respectively were attending school.

ARDROSSAN – ST. ANDREW’S MEMORIAL PARSONAGE

Yesterday the foundation stone of this parsonage was laid by the Rt. Hon. the Earl of Eglinton and Winton.

A short service was held in the church (which adjoins the new parsonage) prior to the ceremony, which was conducted by the Rev. Robert Mordue, who in the course of a few remarks stated that the parsonage was being erected in memory of Lady Sophia, Countess of Eglinton, whose kindness to the poor would be long remembered.

The company then adjourned to the new building, where Mr Mordue introduced Lord Eglinton, and explained that copies of each of the two local papers had been deposited inside the jar, together with a sovereign and a double sovereign of the jubilee year.

Mr Cook, writer, Ardrossan, who acts as honorary treasurer of the parsonage fund, proposed a vote of thanks to Lord Eglinton, which was heartily awarded, and the proceedings were closed with prayer.

ARDROSSAN POLICE COMMISSIONERS

The monthly meeting of Police Commissioners was held on Monday evening – Provost Hogarth presiding.

A report from the Works Committee stated that the committee had met with the road surveyor and the railway engineer regarding the deficiencies in the levels at the new railway bridge in Glasgow Street. The negotiations were still in progress, and the committee hoped that a satisfactory arrangement might soon be come to.

It was afterwards explained that the Works Committee would refuse to sanction the shutting up of Paisley Street during railway operations till the required alterations had been carried out.

Both matters were left in the hands of the Works Committee with full powers.

The Works Committee were instructed to examine the burgh streets and pavements, with a view of having them put in order.

The rate of assessment for the year from 15th May, 1886, to 15th May, 1887, was fixed at 10d per £1 within the unexempted area, and 4d per £1 within the partially exempted area, the dates of payment and Appeal Court to be fixed as formerly.

The Commissioners then sat as the Local Authority, when the assessment for public health purposed was fixed at one penny per £1.
