ARDROSSAN BOWLING CLUB

On Monday evening the members of this club were engaged playing for a series of prizes given by the President (the Hon. Seton Montgomerie) and others. The game consisted of twenty-one heads, and was played single-handed.

A handsome inkstand given by the president formed the first prize, a pair of bowls the second, and there were several other minor prizes.

The final tie between Messrs Kirkhope and Gray was not concluded when darkness set in, and it was agreed to play it off yesterday afternoon, which was accordingly done, when Mr Gray beat his opponent only by one shot, the players having repeatedly stood pars.

The first prize thus falls to Mr Gray, the second to Mr Kirkhope, the third to Mr Marr, and the fourth to Mr Morris.

Several consolation prizes were also given, which fell to the following – Messrs John Boyd; George Barrie, John Craig, and J. Emslie.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The monthly meeting of this board was held in Saltcoats Town Hall on Thursday evening – Mr James Fullarton presiding.

The committee appointed to inquire as to children sent to industrial schools submitted a report, in which they recommended that in any case of a child being brought before the Court under the Industrial and Reformatory Schools Act, where the expenses would be likely to fall on the Parochial Board, the board craves to be heard before any decision is come to, and would feel obliged if the officials of the Court would give intimation to the inspector of the board.

The report was adopted, and the inspector instructed to forward extracts of the minutes to the magistrates.

The usual monthly meeting of this board was held in Saltcoats Town Hall on Thursday evening – Mr Alexander Ingram presiding.

The list of paupers was placed in the hands of members. The number of paupers chargeable at 4th August last was 173.

The chairman detailed the result of an inspection in the town of Saltcoats, conducted by Doctors Littlejohn, Kinnear, and himself, and concluded by reading a report made to the Board of Supervision by Dr. Littlejohn on the subject, which was highly satisfactory.

In reference to the temporary hospital, the chairman intimated that Mr Stewart, factor to Lord Eglinton had granted a site, should the accommodation unhappily be required.

Several members spoke in condemnatory terms of the sanitary condition of the Saltcoats part of Stevenston parish, and urged enforcement of strict sanitary measures.

This terminated the business.
