CASUALTY OF WAR
16 AUGUST 1917

Died on service, ROBERT KIRKPATRICK NEILL, (21), Northumberland Fusiliers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of the late John Neill, Skeoch, Mauchline, and Mrs Mary Neill, 60 Ardrossan Road, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“News of the death of Second Lieutenant Robert Kirkpatrick Neill, Northumberland Fusiliers, was received in our district with the deepest regret.

The deceased officer, who was 21 years of age, was the third son of the late John Neill, Skeoch, Mauchline, and Mrs Neill, 60 Ardrossan Road, Saltcoats, and was known and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends in Saltcoats and Ardrossan. He was an old Ardrossan Academy boy, and was later engaged in the office of Messrs Reid & Mair, St. Vincent Place, Glasgow.

He joined the Army in October 1915, and after undergoing a course in the Inns of Courts Officers’ Training Corps he was gazetted in February last, and went to the front seven weeks later.

He was home on furlough only about a month ago. His friends were pleased to see him looking so well, and the news of his death came to them with all the greater shock.

The sympathy of the community will go out to Mrs Neill and family in their sorrow. This is the second bereavement that has befallen the household through the war, Lieutenant T. Neill, the second son, having been killed in action over a year ago.”

SALTCOATS REGATTA

This event was favoured with fine weather, and there was a large turnout of spectators.

Provost McIsaac, of Parkend, was Commodore and Commissioner Guthrie Vice-Commodore, Mr Thomas Taylor acting as starter. A tug anchored off the harbour was used as the Commodore’s barge and a large number of boats were utilised to witness the events.

At Bay View Cottage, Saltcoats, on the 16th instant, aged 11 years, Abigail Smith, eldest daughter of the late Robert Bryce, shipmaster, Sydney.

LAD KILLED AT SALTCOATS

A fatal accident occurred on the Glasgow & South-Western Railway at Saltcoats last night, MICHAEL MURRAY, (19), SON OF Patrick Murray, fish salesman, Melrose Cottage, Ardrossan Road, Saltcoats, being knocked down and instantaneously killed by an express train which leaves St. Enoch Station, Glasgow, at five o’clock.

The lad was employed at the engine sheds, and left his residence to walk along the railway to his work. He was on the railway boundary wall, and before going on the line waited until the Campbeltown express had passed. He failed observe the other train approaching, and was knocked
down.

CASUALTY OF WAR
18 AUGUST 1920

Died in Leicester Military Hospital of malaria contracted on service, Sergeant Major WILLIAM HENRY CHAPPELL, (36), Service No. 75011, Derbyshire Yeomanry – Theatre of war, Salonika and Egypt – husband of Gertrude Chappell, later Mrs Gertrude Graham, Ailsa View, Melbourne Terrace, Saltcoats.

A SALTCOATS SEAMAN DROWNED

This week intelligence reached Saltcoats of the death by drowning of JOHN PRESTON, seaman, of the S.S. YEDDO, in Cronstadt harbour, on the 25th July.

Preston had been employed as night-watchman on board the vessel, and had been sent in a small boat to take the second mate on board from another vessel. He was not again seen alive, but the boat in which he sailed was found empty next morning about 100 yards from the steamer.

The body was found two days afterwards.

He was 26 years of age, and has left a widow and three of a family residing in Saltcoats.

SMITH’S MISSION COAST HOME AT SALTCOATS

This truly benevolent institution for the sick poor, we are glad to learn, is at the present time quite filled with convalescent inmates, almost sixty people being now in the enjoyment of its advantages, and many more having their names on the roll for admission as soon as their turn comes.

This beneficent undertaking, like many others, had a very humble origin, although it has now grown to very considerable dimensions.

About five years ago, Mr James Smith, a city missionary, belonging to the congregation of the Rev. Dr. Ker in this city, commenced it with a humble dwelling of two apartments, principally for the benefit of some of the sick poor with whom he came in contact on his daily walks in the eastern part of the city.

With the unpaid and invaluable service and kind co-operation of Mr William Bryden, clothier, Saltcoats, and assisted by liberal pecuniary support from several ladies and gentlemen, the Home at Saltcoats has now grown to be a very remarkable institution, and is open to admission of sick poor from all parts of the city without payment or reward.

SALTCOATS BOWLING CLUB

The following gentlemen have succeeded in gaining prizes during the present season –

Gold Medal, Mr Alexander Fullerton;
President’s Prize, Mr James Miller; and
Mr Cowan Gibson’s Prize, Mr James Shearer.

A competition for a timepiece, presented by Mr James Baillie, is at present in progress, and as it requires to be won twice, it is likely to extend over another season.

At the R.C. Chapel, Saltcoats, on the 19th instant, by the Rev. William Hallinan, Thomas Turnbull, Esquire, shipbuilder, Whitby, to Georgiana, second surviving daughter of James Shearer, shipbuilder, Ardrossan.
