THE GLASGOW HOLIDAYS

Ardrossan:
A beautiful day on Friday was followed on Saturday by weather of the most miserable description, rain falling throughout the greater part of the day. The town, however, was quite as full as usual, and every available sleeping place was taken up.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING

On Friday afternoon MINNIE WINNING, seven years of age, and residing at 347 Great Eastern Road, Glasgow, fell into the water at Winton Pier, Ardrossan, and narrowly escaped being drowned.

Along with two little boys she had strayed from the town to the pier, and was in the act of pointing out to her companions the best place to fish when she fell into the water.

Few people were about at the time, but one of the boys gave the alarm, and WILLIAM SOULIS, a harbour pilot, seized a tow rope, and, having fastened it, swung himself down into the water and picked up the girl, who was in a very exhaustive condition.

A boat afterwards went to Soulis’s relief.

Earl is Offered a Coffin

The Earl of Eglinton and Winton, though still very much alive is being offered a coffin by Ardrossan Town Council. The coffin, a stone one weighing two tons, was unearthed at the Castlehill in January, 1911. It is at present in the entrance hall at the Burgh Chambers, "a most inappropriate place" according to Burgh Treasurer Hogarth. "It belonged to a predecessor of Lord Eglinton," the Treasurer I told the Council, “but if he does not want it we will offer it to any suitable museum or institution in Ayrshire."

"If no one wants it we will put it back where it come from -- where it never should have been taken from." Disposal of the coffin is only part of a scheme to tidy up the hallway and library at the chambers. A number of large oil paintings stored in the hall have been ascertained to have no value. Only one of them, a portrait of the late ex-Provost Barr, has sentimental value. It will be retained but the others will be destroyed. The library and furniture will be renovated at an estimated cost of £150 plus about £20 for emptying the book-cases and replacing the books in order.

We mention the coffin in a few topics. Here are but two: here and this one with an image

WRECK OF AN ARDROSSAN STEAMER

The S.S. NORTH BRITISH, belonging to the Ardrossan Steam Navigation Company, bound from Silloth to Dublin, went on the rocks at Clayhead, near Laxey, Isle of Man, yesterday morning at five o’clock.

The crew and passengers, numbering about 60, were all safely landed, and found quarters on the island.

There was a deluge of rain all day, and towards evening the wind freshened from the north-east, and the vessel began to break up.

There were 80 sheep on board, but only a small number of them have been saved.

THEFT OF £56

At Ardrossan Police Court yesterday, ARCHIBALD ADAMS, employed on board the lighter SCOTIA, of Rothesay, was brought up on a charge of stealing a pocket-book containing the above sum of money from the person of a timber merchant named Alexander Mitchell.

Mitchell, it is stated, was drinking in the company of Adams on Tuesday night, when the robbery was effected, and it is alleged that he took the pocket-book from the owner and went off with it.

The money has been recovered, and is in possession of the police, who at once apprehended Adams. The case, however, was not gone into at the Court, the prisoner having been remitted to the Sheriff.

THE ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD CASE

It will be remembered that Mr Charles Marshall, teacher of the Ardrossan Public School, lately presented a petition to the Sheriff praying that the Ardrossan School Board should be interdicted from entering the school for the purpose of examining it, except with his consent; and that the Sheriff Substitute (Anderson) granted the interdict craved, with expenses.

The School Board held a meeting to consider the decision, when it was resolved by a majority to appeal against it to Sheriff Campbell.

His Lordship has now pronounced judgment refusing the interdict asked, and finding Mr Marshall liable in the whole expenses of the process.
