GLASGOW HERALD
11 JUNE 1901
RETURN OF VOLUNTEERS TO SCOTLAND
Saltcoats:
Last night seven of the twelve men who went to the front in the Volunteer Companies of the Royal Scots Fusiliers received an enthusiastic reception on their return home.
Awaiting their arrival at the railway station of the Glasgow & South-Western Company were Provost Guthrie, Bailies Blakely and Miller, members of the Town Council, Town Clerk, Procurator-Fiscal, Rev. W. Rossie Brown, chaplain of the local Volunteers, and a large number of citizens.
The square outside the station was packed with people. Here the Volunteers and the Boys’ Brigade were drawn up.
A procession was formed, consisting of the Volunteers, Provost, Magistrates, and Town Council, members of the Service Company, and the Boys’ Brigade. Headed by pipers, the principal streets were traversed.
Returning to the Town Hall, where a large company had gathered, Provost Guthrie, who presided, congratulated the Volunteers on their return.
After speeches from Captain Allan and Bailie Blakely, Mrs Allan presented each of the Volunteers with a handsome gold medal having a suitable inscription.
Sergeant Beckett returned thanks.
Five of the twelve men who went out to the front joined other forces there for further service, and they will get their medals when they return home.
The proceedings were carried out with great enthusiasm.
