SALTCOATS LICENSING COURT

Provost Miller presiding.

An application was made by John Fleming for a six-day hotel licence for premises in Harbour Street.

Mr Joseph Kirkland, writer, appeared for the applicant, and referred to the fact that in Saltcoats there was no licensed hotel.

Mr Bain, writer, appeared for the objectors.

The Provost intimated that the public house licence would be renewed and the application for a hotel licence was refused.

It was agreed to issue new by-laws for an alteration in the closing days. Ten o’clock was continued as the closing hour.

SALTCOATS DISTRICT LICENSING COURT

Mr Philip Thomas, who holds a wine and ale licence applied to have spirits included in his certificate, but the application was refused.

Licences were granted to Messrs Thomas Roe and Hugh Smith, new tenants of two public houses in Stevenston.

The application of Mr James Thomas for renewal of a transferred certificate for a public house in Quay Street, Saltcoats, was granted.

Several publicans who had been convicted of breaches of certificate were admonished.

All the old licences were granted as follows: -

Ardrossan:
Hotels, 2; public houses, 13; grocers and spirit dealers, 7.

Saltcoats:
Hotels, 2; public houses, 13; grocers and spirit dealers, 10; porters and ales, 2.

Stevenston:
Hotels, 2; public houses, 11; grocers and spirit dealers, 2.

TOTAL – 64.

SALTCOATS FREE GARDENERS

The sixtieth annual meeting of the Solomon Lodge was held on Friday night – Commissioner Alpine presiding.

Mr James B. Aitken reported that the income during the year was £288 10s 10d; aliment paid £122 5s; funeral money paid, £27.

There were eight deaths – the youngest 43 and the oldest 84 years – the average being 69 years.

The stock of the society amounts to £2717, and the membership is 468.

The following office-bearers were elected: -

President, Commissioner Alpine; vice-president, Mr R. Taylor; treasurer, Mr James B. Aitken; secretary, Mr John Thomson.

17 APRIL 1885

APPRENTICE SEAMAN DROWNED

While the ship CITY OF CORINTH, owned by Messrs George Smith & Sons, Glasgow, was on a voyage from Newcastle New South Wales, to Rangoon, an apprentice sailor names JAMES CRAIG SMITH, belonging to Saltcoats, second son of the late Captain R. Smith, fell from aloft and was drowned.

The ship was put round, a boat launched, and every effort made to save the unfortunate lad.

CASUALTY OF WAR
18 APRIL 1916

Died on service, Private JAMES COLVIN, (19), 1ST Battalion Cameron Highlanders – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – brother of Mrs S. Cambridge, 76 Canal Street, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Official intimation has been received by Mrs Williamson, 108 Ardgowan Street, Glasgow, that her son, Private J. Colvin, Cameron Highlanders, has been killed in action.

The family belongs to Saltcoats, and have just recently removed to Glasgow.

Private Colvin was formerly employed in Nobel’s Factor and resided with his sister, Mrs Cambridge, 76 Canal Street, Saltcoats.

He was home on furlough three weeks ago, and had just returned to the trenches when he received the wound which caused his death.”

SALTCOATS LICENSING COURT

Yesterday the half-yearly Licensing Court embracing Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston – was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, the Justices of the Peace present being Messrs William Mutter of Meiklelaught, presiding; Provost Barr, Ardrossan; William Lockhart of Mayfield; Patrick Warner of Ardeer; D. I. Mack, Ardrossan; Anthony Mack, Ardrossan; and J. G. Halkett, Saltcoats.

Prior to commencing the business the Clerk read a petition from the Ardrossan Lifeboat Lodge of Good Templars praying the Justices to refuse licences to new applicants, and urging the necessity of closing up back doors.

For renewal of licences there were 53 applications, 52 of which were granted and 1 delayed; for new premises 2 applications, which were granted; 8 applications were lodged by new tenants, 7 being granted and 1 refused. The case refused was that of William Rogers, Largs, who desired a grocer’s licence for a house in Stevenston. Notice of appeal was given.

Nicol Laidlaw applied for a renewal of transferred certificate for Saracen’s Head Inn, Saltcoats, which was granted.

The Court for Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston, was held in the Saltcoats Town Hall, yesterday afternoon.

All the old licences were granted. Seven applications for renewal of transferred certificates and one application by a new tenant in Stevenston were granted.

No new applications came before the Court.
