With song and sentiment the company enjoyed themselves till about half past ten o’clock, when dancing commenced, and continued with a brief interval for refreshments at one o’clock, till an advanced hour in the morning.

FATAL FALL DOWN A PIT SHAFT

On the afternoon of Saturday last, a fatal accident occurred at No. 4 Auchenharvie Pit, Stevenston, near Saltcoats. An old man, named PETER HUGHES, who hawks coals, fell down the shaft and was instantly killed.

No one observed the accident; but as the man was over seventy years of age, and was very defective in sight, it is supposed he had not observed the opening.

His corpse was much mangled.
