SALTCOATS GRAIN AND MEAL MARKET

There was a good attendance at market on January 30.

There were 60 bolls of wheat exposed, 4 of which sold at 19s, 12 at 18s 6d, and 12 at 18s. Of 54 bolls of oatmeal exposed, 10 sold at 20s 6d, and 24 at 20s. There were 30 bolls of beans offered, of which 8 sold at 24s.

ASSAULT AND BREACH OF THE PEACE

At Kilmarnock Sheriff and Jury Court yesterday, before Sheriff Anderson, WILLIAM HUGHES, a labourer, was charged with having in the house of William McGranahan, labourer, Kyleshill Street, Saltcoats, on the 31st December last, assaulted Mrs McGranahan to the serious injury of her person by striking her two blows on the forehead and right arm with a pair of tongs.

The accused, who was also charged with a breach of the peace and had previous convictions, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.

SEVERE STORM AND HIGH TIDE

Saltcoats:
Behind Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, the wall of a weaver’s shop was thrown down by the fury of the sea, and the goods had to be removed; while a bakehouse in the same neighbourhood was completely flooded, and work has had to be stopped.

A number of workmen were employed on Sunday to prevent further damage.

Died at sea, ARCHIBALD McALLISTER, (33), second cook on the S.S. CALIFORNIA, husband of Elizabeth Kennedy or McAllister, 25 Gladstone Road, Saltcoats, and son of the late Archibald Dewar McAllister and Margaret Gray McAllister.

[The S.S. CALIFORNIA, a defensively-armed merchant/passenger ship, en route from New York to Glasgow, was torpedoed near Fastnet by German submarine U-85. Forty-three lives were lost.]
