ARDEER GOLF CLUB
The monthly meeting for the handicap presented by Mr Robertson, the captain of the club, was played over Ardeer Links on Saturday.
A portion of the links was covered with water through the recent floods, and in consequence the usual nature had to be departed from and two round of nine holes were substituted. There was a gusty wind prevailing, though the weather on the whole was favourable.
The winner was Kenneth MacDonald.

FIRE – STEVENSTON
On Wednesday night, shortly before twelve o’clock, a shop tenanted by Mr David Cree, and used as a sale-room for unredeemed pledges, was discovered on fire. A man living next door was aroused by smoke, which he found was coming from below a side door in the close and the front door of Mr Cree’s shop.
He gave an alarm, and an entrance having been effected at the side door, it was found that the stock in the shop was in flames.
From the Stevenston burn, which runs opposite the house, a plentiful supply of water was got and thrown on the fire, which in less than a couple of hour was completely extinguished, having been confined to the shop where it originated.
The stock, consisting of hardware, clothing, and woollen goods, was destroyed.

THE SMITH BEQUEST
The committee of this bequest for the parish of Stevenston report to the trustees that they have received from Mr Robert Wyllie, Kilwinning, the sum of £26 18s 3d as their share of the fund for the year 1879.
In clothing, school fees, and books they have expended money on 26 children in the parish.
On several occasions during the year they have visited the schools where the children are educated, and find that the attendance is fairly regular, and the progress satisfactory. They have also visited the parents of every family, and strongly recommended them to have their children regularly be at school and church.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD
At a meeting of this Board on Monday – Mr D. Donaldson presiding – a letter was read from Mr Galloway, of Kilmeny, Ardrossan, manager of the Glasgow Homes for Destitute Children at Saltcoats, claiming two of the inmates were entitled to compete for the Smith Bursaries in respect that they are attending a public school in the parish of Stevenston, and have passed the fifth standard of the Scottish Code.

The first meeting of the new Board was fixed to be held on 16th April.
