ARDROSSAN FREE CHURCH

In connection with the ordination of the Rev. Allan Cameron to the pastorate of this church a soiree was held in the Assembly Hall on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance.

The Rev. William Mackenzie, West Kilbride, who had acted as moderator during the vacancy, presided and delivered an appropriate address.

Mr John Allison, draper, in a few appropriate remarks, presented the newly inducted minister with pulpit gown, cassock, and bands, together with bible, psalm book, and hymn book, the gift of the ladies of the congregation.

The Rev. Mr Cameron acknowledged the gifts in suitable terms, and thereafter took the chair.

COURT OF SESSION – GOODWIN v. GOODWIN

In this action JOHN TOPPING GOODWIN, ironfounder, 9 South Crescent, Ardrossan, seeks payment of £5250 1s 4d from JAMES GOODWIN, Overtoun, West Kilbride, and five others, the partners of the late firm of James Goodwin & Company, engineers and ironfounders at Motherwell and Ardrossan.

Pursuer was a member of the firm of James Goodwin & Company.

He states that in accordance with the deed of copartnery the firm should have subsisted till July, 1894; but that, without consulting him, defenders amalgamated the business with Coats Iron and Steel Company, the undertaking to be known as Goodwin, Jardine & Company Limited.

Pursuer in consequence retired from the firm, and claims the above sum as his share of the capital.

Defenders say that pursuer signed a disposition conveying heritable property belonging to them to the new company, and that he signed the deed of trust of the new company.

They also state their willingness to pay pursuer his share of the capital of the late firm, but only ratable with the other partners, and not immediately as pursuer claims.

The record in the case was closed today.

DETAILS OF THE STORM

Ardrossan:
It will take several thousand pounds to make good the damage done by the storm.

The road between Ardrossan and West Kilbride has in many places been undermined by the sea, which worked its way to the fields beyond.

Large portions of the wreck of ANNETTE, stranded on the Horse Island, were washed ashore, and the spars, masts, etc., acting as battering rams, levelled embankments, walls and iron fences.

In the workshop of Mr William Young, engineer, at the Inches, work had to be suspended, the water being about 2 feet deep inside the building.

A portion of the graving dock of Messrs Barr & Shearer has given way, and it is believed work will not be carried on her until the damage is rectified.

Serious breaches have been made in the breakwater which protects the sea wall at the Pilot House, and in some cases trucks were forced off the rails at the harbour, their contents being strewn about the quay.

A SCOTCH STEAMER IN COLLISION

A fishing smack SOUVENIR was towed into Ramsgate on Monday night in a very damaged condition, having been run into by the Scotch steamer BARON CLYDE, belonging to Ardrossan.

The collision took place in perfectly clear weather while the smack had her trawl down in the North Sea.

The port quarter of the vessel was cut clean away.

The steamer, after rendering temporary assistance, proceeded on her voyage.

WAIFE FROM THE SEA

A number of letters were recently picked up on the Corriecravie shore, on the west side of Arran. All of them were written in Italian, and addressed to Signor Benedetto Stangher, captain of the Austro-Hungarian brig FATHER DEAK.

There are a few business letters among them, but the greater part seem to have been written by the captain’s wife at Fiume, in February and March, 1879.

They were carefully dried and handed over to the Receiver of Wreck at Ardrossan.

ARDROSSAN FREE CHURCH

On Sunday last the Rev. Allan Cameron, late of St. Columba Free Church, Govan, was introduced to his new congregation by the Rev. John Sloan, Anderston Free Church, Glasgow, who preached in the forenoon (to children) from Psalm ii 7; and (to adults) from Ezekiel xxxvii 4.

At the close of his discourse he paid a high compliment to the merits of Mr Cameron, and exhorted the congregation to help him in every way.

Mr Cameron preached in the afternoon from Habakkuk iii 4, and Mr Sloan again occupied the pulpit in the evening, preaching from Isaiah xiv 22.

At all the diets there was a large attendance and the collection was liberal.
