THE NEW YEAR

Ardrossan:
The town was very quiet, and very little intoxication was observable. Rain began to fall in the afternoon, which had the effect of thinning the streets. The children attending the New Parish Church Sabbath School enjoyed their usual treat at mid-day, and there was a good turn-out of children with their parents and friends. The Rev. J. D. McCall, the pastor, presided, and in addressing the scholars explained that they had contributed the sum of £6 15s 0½d towards the support of an orphan at Saltcoats. Thereafter each of them received a service of cake and fruit, with a little book. A similar meeting was held in the Free Church.

Of the situation on the Caledonian Railway the officials continue to take a hopeful view. A number of the drivers and firemen went in yesterday at Dundee, and there have also been accessions from the ranks of the men on strike at Ardrossan, Polmadie, and other places.

THE NEW YEAR

Ardrossan:
Watchnight services were held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, at which there was a large attendance. One or two cannon shots announced the hour at midnight, and the shrill screaming of locomotive steam-whistles rang over the town. The morning broke bright and clear, and the earlier trains carried away many who visited to take advantage of the good weather and spend the New Year in the city. During the forenoon the streets were very busy but as the day wore on their aspect changed, and there were fewer people about than on an ordinary Saturday evening. The principal shops were closed, and also several public houses. Morning services for Sabbath school children, and the 5th Company of 1st Ayrshire and Galloway Artillery Volunteers had a carbine shooting competition amongst the members, whilst the local society of Good Templars held a soiree in the evening.

CURLING
BELFAST v. ARDROSSAN

On Friday last, two rinks of the Ardrossan Castle Club crossed the channel, and met two rinks of the Belfast club on Seaview Pond, Belfast, when, after a very keen and well-contested game of twenty-five heads, the Irish curlers beat their Scottish brethren by 5 shots.

The ice was dull and watery.

THE NEW YEAR

Ardrossan:
New Year’s Day falling on Sunday had a considerable effect in preventing the usual amount of “first footing.” Yesterday, however, though a great many people left per train, the streets had a very busy appearance, and a considerable amount of intoxication was observable.

The usual meeting of Sabbath-school children attending the Free Church was held in the church at 12 o’clock, when the children received their usual treat and were suitably addressed.
