Re: Ardrossan - On This Day In History
The CONTEST, incidentally, with a crew of 26 on board, set sail for Liverpool from Bombay on the 21st February 1874, and was never heard of again.Hughie wrote: ↑Sat Oct 17, 2020 10:41 pm Further to the above mentioned vessel Contest
The launch of the Contest was the first big local event to
be covered by the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald which declared:-
'It is not a little gratifying that a town' which fifty years ago was scarcely in existence should now be able to launch the largest timber-built vessel which has ever been launched on the Clyde. This, no doubt, is chiefly due to the public-spirited conduct of the Earl of Eglinton whose exertions for the good of the town have been unremitting and of the most liberal description. Associated with him have been a number of gentlemen, amongst the foremost of whom we may name Messrs. Barr and Shearer, who by their enterprise and skill as shipbuilders have aided in rendering Ardrossan famous as a shipbuilding and shipping port.
The above is from the publication "Ardrossan Shipyards - Struggle for survival 1825 - 1983
by Catriona Levy and Ardrossan Local History Workshop

GLASGOW HERALD
21 OCTOBER 1865
SHIPPING CASUALTY
Stranraer, October 17 – By the deposition of the master of the HEIDEE, of Preston, reported on the 16th as having been in collision, it appears that at 8 p.m. on the 14th, when about six miles south of Corsewall Light, close-hauled, wind N-W, on her voyage to Ardrossan, in ballast, he saw a vessel’s green light about a mile to the leeward; that the strange vessel, with the wind free, altered her course, and ran right on board the HEIDEE, striking her midships, carrying away forerigging, channel-plates fore and aft, cutting down two planks, and breaking the mainmast in three places; and that he jumped on board the ship, and was told by the master and pilot that her name was M.B., an Austrian vessel, loaded, bound out of Troon.
On obtaining a light and examining his vessel, and finding that she was not making water his crew returned on board, and worked to clear the vessels; and that during this time another vessel hove to alongside, which proved to the DUKE OF ATHOL, of Belfast, Mooney, who sent two of his crew on board to assist to clear the wreck.
As soon as the vessels were disengaged the Austrian ship squared yards and left, although the master had promised to stay by the HEIDEE.
The DUKE OF ATHOL then took her in tow, and brought her into Cairnryan.
The HEIDEE has been surveyed, and found very much damaged, and is to be towed to Ardrossan for repairs.
