GLASGOW HERALD
6 OCTOBER 1843
FETES AT ARDROSSAN IN HONOUR OF THE BIRTHDAY OF THE EARL OF EGLINTON
The anniversary of the birthday of the Earl of Eglinton and Winton has always been celebrated with the utmost éclat at Ardrossan, of which his Lordship is the feudal superior.
This year, the occasion was observed with more than the usual enthusiasm. In order, as it were, to concentrate the respect and attachment entertained towards the Noble Earl by the inhabitants of the adjacent towns and villages, it was proposed to establish a series of amusements at Ardrossan, on his Lordship’s birthday, to be designated “The Twenty-ninth September Games.”
The first of these took place on Saturday last. According to the calendar, the fetes should have come off on Friday, but as this would have interfered with the Caledonian Hunt and Western Meeting at Ayr, it was agreed to defer them till the day succeeding.
The Earl and Countess of Eglinton, and a select party (among whom we observed Lord Glenlyon, the Duke of Montrose, Lord William Graham, Lord A. St. Maur, Lord and Lady Drumlanrig, Lord Henry Lennox, Lord and Lady Ernest Bruce, Mr. Pepys Corkerell and the Misses Corkerell, Mr. Little Gilmour of Inch, and Captain Montgomerie, R.N.) attended and witnessed the different sports.
These, we may mention, were conducted with great spirit, under the able management of Messrs A. Young, Porteous, Cunningham, Dr. Munro, etc.
Subjoined is an outline of the day’s amusements: -
A horse race in heats, open to all Ayrshire and Island of Arran, carrying each 10st. 7 lbs. Distance to be twice round the course, to be formed on the South sands, for a prize of five pounds to the first horse, one pound to the second.
1. Mr. Robert Hill’s (Saltcoats) – BLACK BOB.
2. Mr. Francis Wark’s (Largs) – PRINCE OF DARKNESS.
3. Mr. J. Orr’s (Ardrossan) – JAMIE.
Owing to the slippery state of the beach, on which the race was contested, JAMIIE fell in the first heat, but he was soon on his feet again, and made a determined effort to make up his leeway. The PRINCE OF DARKNESS, who appeared to have some of the spirit of his “illustrious” namesake, bolted into the sea in the second heat; but before he had run far, his mettle began to cool, and he was glad to yield to the direction of his rider. BLACK BOB, in consequence won in a canter.
A race for ponies, not exceeding 13½ hands high, carrying not less than 8st. each, open to all, for a prize of two pounds to the first pony, and ten shillings to the second.
1. Mr. John Craig’s (Craigton, Stewarton) – JENNY NETTLE.
2. Mr. William Nicol’s (Ardrossan) – GEORDIE.
3. Mr. P. Croker’s (Saltcoats) – JESS.
A trotting race, open to Ayrshire only, carrying not less that 11st. each. Distance four miles, for a prize of three pounds to the first horse, and one pound to the second.
1. Mr. J. Cochrane’s (Chapelhouse, Dunlop) – BETTY.
2. Mr. J. Neil’s (Ardneil, West Kilbride) – DAINTY.
This was an excellent race.
A boat race, for any boat or yawl not exceeding 30 feet over all, pulling four oars, for a prize of one pound ten shillings to the first boat, and ten shillings to the second. Distance two miles.
1. Mr. Fife’s (Ardrossan) – GEM.
2. Mr. Bannatyne’s Arran) – HIGHLAND LASSIE.
3. Mr. Fife’s (Ardrossan) – BESS.
A boat race, pulling two oars, not to exceed 13 feet over all, for a prize of one pound to the first, and five shillings to the second. Distance two miles.
1. Mr. Crawford Hogarth’s (Portencross, West Kilbride) – FRITS.
2. -----------------------------(Ardrossan) – FERRET.
Frits led all the way, and was never passed.
A sailing boat race, by boats not exceeding 30 feet over all, for a prize of one pound.
1. Mr. J. Malcolm’s (Portencross, West Kilbride) – LARK.
2. Mr. E. Malcom’s (Portencross, West Kilbride) - PUCK.
3. Mr. D. Jackson’s (Troon) – AGNES.
0. Mr. Robert Tyre’s (Ardrossan) – JEAN.
0. Mr. W. Gibbon’s (Troon) – TWO BROTHERS.
0. Mr. W. Jack’s (Ardrossan) – PILOT.
0. Mr. John Shearer’s (Ardrossan) - EGLINTON
0. Mr. Browne’s (Plymouth) – LYNBAR
0. Mr. John Wyllie’s (Saltcoats) – DAFFODIL
0. Mr. James Clark’s (Saltcoats) – THE PILOT.
The wind was blowing right ahead; and, as the distance was round the Horse Isle and back, it required considerable experience and dexterity to keep the crafts from running to leeward.
While this match was proceeding, other games were contested on the common that intervenes between the road and the sea-beach, at the extremity of the town; and as these brought the manly strength and vigour of different parishes into competition, the interest that prevailed was intense.
