GLASGOW HERALD
13 APRIL 1881
ARDROSSAN POLICE COMMISSIONERS
This Board had its monthly meeting on Monday evening – Provost Barr presiding.
It was agreed to carry out the proposed system of drainage for Montgomerie Street and Glasgow Street as recommended by the committee.
Provost Barr protested against the former scheme. He owned one half of the houses in the district complained of, and had never heard a complaint from any of his tenants as to a nuisance or anything hurtful to health. He thought that before proceeding to spend public money they should weigh the matter well, and get the report of a medical man.
He moved that the matter be postponed for twelve months, and that a medical man be called to report on the matter.
This was seconded by Mr. Anderson.
Bailie Hogarth moved that the recommendations of the committee be agreed to and the work proceeded with, which was seconded by Mr. Boyd, builder.
Bailie Hogarth’s motion was carried – the Provost dissenting.
The Clerk was instructed to advertise for offers for the work.
Messrs Boyd, builder, and Gilfillan were appointed a committee to look after the numbering of houses in Glasgow Street.
The Clerk said the quarterly report of the burgh analyst, stated that he had received three samples of whisky from the sanitary inspector, all of which were good.

ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD NOMINATIONS
Eight candidates were nominated for seven seats, the seven members of the old Board, and Mr. Thomas Miller, Saltcoats, a new candidate.
Mr. Morris, one of the old members, withdrew in order to prevent an election, but then Mr. Miller withdrew on the ground that he was nominated without his consent being obtained.
It is expected that Mr. Morris will now cancel his withdrawal, and the personnel of the new Board will remain as before.

Sir,
SECONDARY EDUCATION IN ARDROSSAN
Some months ago attention was drawn in your columns to an attempt on the part of a reactionary party in Ardrossan School Board to arrest the development of secondary education. The danger was a very grave one, for the chance majority were in such acute conflict with the Government that the reduction of one academy had been threatened by the authority in London.
I am now happy to give prominence to the fact that the School Board election Saturday last has resulted in an overwhelming victory for progressive secondary education, six of the seven members returned being pledged to maintain the academy as a higher grade school.
The educational prospect four our neighbourhood is thus very bright, and the academy, which has so steadily grown in efficiency, bids fair to become one of the very foremost in the West of Scotland.
I am &c.,
ROBERT M. ADAMSON,
Parish of Ardrossan.
