Death of Ardrossan Ironfounder
IN MEMORIAM - MR DAVID GOODWIN

The death of Mr David Goodwin, Arran Place, Ardrossan, on Sabbath morning last, after a brief illness, recalls the fact that it was to the brothers Goodwin that Ardrossan is indebted for the industry of ironfounding. They came strangers over 10 year ago, built up prosperous business within a few years by hard work: identified themselves with the best interests of the place and were respected as townsmen and employers. Of the five brothers, Mr James the eldest), residing in Ardrossan, and Mr John, residing in Motherwell, alone service: a with the collapse of Goodwin, Jardine, & Co. some years ago there works here and in Motherwell passed into other hands.

The respect in which all the brothers were held were shared in to a very large measure by Mr David, who has just gone from us. He had a singularly amiable disposition - had always a smile and cheery word for his friends, and to the general community was perhaps the best known personality in the firm, from being the resident manager, more especially after Mr James had practically retired. He took a great Interest in the progress of the Fre e Church, and it will be noticed that sympathetic reference was made to this at the annual meeting on Wednesday evening. A serious illness a few years ago impaired his general health, and prepared ton way for the illness to which he has succumbed. We will miss a familiar figure: and much sympathy is felt for his widow and family. He died age 64.

ARDROSSAN LITERARY SOCIETY

This society closed the session by a tea and assembly, which took place in the Town Hall on Friday evening. About 100 ladies and gentlemen were present.

In the course of the evening excellent addresses were delivered by Messrs David Hamilton, president, and Robert Sweet, vice-president.

The secretary, Mr. Thomas Wallace, submitted a gratifying report which showed that the society had been in a flourishing condition during the year.

The meeting was a great success, the dance music being ably furnished by Mr. Muirhead’s band.

VESSEL ASHORE AT WHITING BAY

The steamer ROSE arrived in Greenock yesterday morning from Londonderry, and reported that when she passed Whiting Bay, Arran, a double-topsail yarded barque was observed ashore. The vessel’s hull was painted black, and her lower masts painted white; her sails were all furled, and she appeared to be pretty far up on the shore. The barque seemed to be light.

On the fact being reported here, one of the Clyde Shipping tug-steamers was despatched to render assistance.

A telegram from the Glasgow Underwriters’ agent at Lamlash states that the barque is the JENNIE ARMSTRONG, from Liverpool for Ardrossan, in ballast.
