SALTCOATS TOWN COUNCIL

At the monthly meeting of Saltcoats Town Council last night – Provost Donaldson presiding – a report was submitted of a meeting of the North Ayrshire Combination Smallpox Hospital Committee at Kilwinning.

The statement showed that the proportion payable by Saltcoats Town Council to the combination amounted to £471.

The Town Clerk pointed out that when the first allocation of £311 was made against the burgh the combination had not been effected, and that Saltcoats had refused liability for interest of that sum. When the constitution was signed on behalf of Saltcoats Town Council it was specially provided that interest should not be paid by them.

The Council agreed to offer to pay to the joint committee the principal sums allocated against the Town Council with interest from June 8, 1908.

SALTCOATS AND DISTRICT LIBERAL UNIONIST ASSOCIATION

Under the auspices of the above association a public meeting was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, on Thursday evening to hear a lecture entitled, “Through Africa” by Mr. Thomas Hurst, of the West of Scotland Liberal Unionist Association. Provost Guthrie presided over a large and enthusiastic meeting.

The chairman, in introducing Mr. Hurst, referred to the war which Britain has been called upon to wage, but they all hoped it would soon be ended, and that with a complete victory for the British arms.

The lecturer then proceeded with his lecture, and gave a lucid historical description of the various places of interest. A large number of slides were shown of the important places touched upon and the chief personages connected with Africa. A collection of war pictures was also shown, which met with a great outburst of cheering.

Votes of thanks closed a most successful meeting.

PROPOSED NEW BATHING POND

At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council – Provost Guthrie presiding – it was reported that, in accordance with a resolution of the Council, the Shores and Improvements Committee had instructed the surveyor to prepare a plan showing a large bathing pond at the Saltpans bathing ground.

The plan was submitted at the Council meeting and the committee recommended that the pond be constructed.

Mr. Bogle, in moving the adoption of the recommendation, pointed out that the pond would provide ample accommodation for swimmers and bathers at all stages of the tide.

The estimated cost was £260, and by making a small charge the cost of construction and upkeep would be met.

The proposal was fully discussed, but on account of the increase in taxation it was decided to abandon the project meantime.
