ARDROSSAN GAS AND WATER WORKS

A special meeting of the Police Commissioners was held on Thursday night – Provost Hogarth presiding.

Mr. J. J. Bailey, writer, was present as agent for the Commissioners, and read a few additional letters from Messrs Robertson & Company, the Parliamentary agents. From the correspondence Mr. Bailey prepared a series of resolutions, which he submitted to the meeting for their consideration. Copious notes were appended to the resolutions, in one of which it was stated that, as one of the Commissioners was interested in the bill, while the clerk acted as agent for it, the correspondence should be laid before a committee of Commissioners in the first instance, and not before the Commissioners as a body and their clerk.

The Provost suggested that the resolutions should be discussed at the usual meeting on Monday night.

It was ultimately resolved by a majority that a draft petition against the bill be framed by Mr. Bailey and sent to the Parliamentary agents for revisal. The Provost intimated that he would decline to sign it.

It was also resolved to meet again with the directors of the Gas and Water Company in friendly conference.

THE STRIKE OF CLYDE SEAMEN AND FIREMEN

After the meeting in the Grand National Halls, Glasgow, on Monday night, Mr. Darby visited Ardrossan, and in the company of Mr. Cassie, the unionist deputy at this port, saw a number of seamen who are pledged to the union principles.

Mr. Cassie has kept a close look-out on all vessels coming to the port, and yesterday through his intervention, the owners of the JASIMAH, Messrs Robertson & Company, agreed to give the advance asked for.

Bills are posted through the town both by the masters and the union. The secretary of the masters’ union denied the statement that the Cunard Company had given way to the union demand, but that the UMBRIA on Saturday had shipped the whole crew at the old rates.

The Messrs Burns have posters up asking for good seamen and firemen – offering them 27s per week.

Two posters are issued by the union intimating that the seamen and firemen of Glasgow are on strike, and asking the assistance of the Ayrshire men at this important crisis.

Mr. Darby left at two o’clock to address a meeting in Greenock, and Mr. Cassie held a confirmation meeting with several Ardrossan hands.

The SEAL after her damage on Saturday was taken to Glasgow yesterday in charge of two tugs for repair.

ARRAN PASSENGER STEAMER UNABLE TO SAIL

A strong gale from the south-west was blowing in the Firth of Clyde all day yesterday, causing a heavy sea, and interfering to some extent with the movement of vessels.

The Caledonian Railway passenger steamer MARCHIONESS OF LORNE, which carries on the daily traffic between Ardrossan and Arran, was unable to leave Ardrossan Harbour yesterday afternoon owing to the force of the gale, and did not make the usual run.

Several vessels on their way down the Firth took shelter for some hours off Arran.

FETE AND FANCY FAIR AT EGLINTON

Yesterday the two days’ fete and fancy fair at Eglinton Castle in aid of the church hall building fund of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Ardrossan, was opened.

The Earl and Countess of Eglinton took a leading part in the making of arrangements for the event, and preparations were made for the reception of a huge number of visitors, the Earl having erected pavilions for stalls, &c., on the ground adjoining the castle, while three of the stalls, presided over by the Countess of Eglinton, Mrs. Coats, of Belleisle, and Mrs. Copland, of Ardrossan, were erected in the hall of the castle.

The massive silver trophy presented to the Earl’s grandfather by the visitors to the tournament and other family plate, was exhibited in the library, while as an attraction to followers of sport in the district a two days’ cricket match between an extremely strong eleven playing under the Earl’s colours and Oxford Authentics figured as the principal item on the programme.

The weather of yesterday morning, however, was of so decidedly an adverse type as to cancel the day’s cricketing and keep down the number of visitors.

Concerts in the saloon of the castle and tableaux given under the management of Miss Vernon and Miss Cook, however, were well attended, and fully merited their successes.
