AN OVERLOADED SHIP

SPATHIOS SPYROS, master mariner, at present residing on board a Greek steamship at Ardrossan Harbour, pleaded guilty at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday to a contravention of the Merchant Shipping Act on January 19, by allowing the vessel to be loaded so as to submerge in salt water the centre of the disc denoting the winter maximum load line applicable to the voyage from Baltimore, U.S.A., to Ardrossan, which the ship had just made.

The Procurator Fiscal stated that the vessel had a cargo on board. A surveyor of the Board of Trade found the ship at Ardrossan Harbour submerged to the extent of over 6 inches above the winter load line, representing an overload of 275 tons. Making allowance for the coal consumed on the voyage, the Board of Trade estimated that the ship must have been overloaded at Baltimore to such an extent as to submerge her to anything from 17 to 20 inches above the winter load line. This represented an overload of roughly 725 tons, and, placing the freightage at the very moderate estimate of £1 per ton, the extra freight secured would be £725. The offence was regarded as a very grave one.

Sheriff Martin Laing imposed the maximum penalty of £100, which was paid at the bar.

SHIPPING NEWS

Lamlash, February 1 – The Hamburg barque FIGARO, Rickless, from Glasgow for Hong Kong, which sailed from the Bay on the 28th January, put back on the following morning, with jibboom and bobstay carried away and cutwater damaged, having been in collision with the sloop HANNAH of Liverpool, Wilkinson, from Ardrossan for Morecambe, with pig iron, off Corsewell Point.

The latter vessel sunk immediately after the collision; the master was saved by getting on board the barque, but the two seamen, THOMAS CONNELLY and RICHARD BAKER, natives of Ireland, were drowned.

The FIGARO immediately put about, but nothing could be seen of the men.

PRIVILEGE TICKETS FOR RAILWAY SERVANTS

A largely attended meeting of railway employees was held in Ardrossan yesterday in connection with the railway servants universal privilege ticket movement.

Mr. Lamont, Coatbridge, representing the Northern District Committee addressed the meeting, and explained that the object of the committee was to obtain privilege tickets to any part of Great Britain and Ireland for railway servants when travelling. The committee was in active co-operation with similar bodies in England, which had already obtained important concessions from railway companies in England and Ireland, and their object was to secure the same privilege for Scotland.

It was unanimously agreed to institute a branch in Ardrossan.
