STEVENSTON PUBLICAN FINED

At Saltcoats J.P. Court, ARCHIBALD GALLOWAY, publican, Glencoe Inn, Main Street, Stevenston, was charged with having committed a breach of his certificate by supplying drink to a customer about half-past one o’clock on Sunday morning, 8th December.

He pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr. W. D. McJannet, Irvine.

After evidence had been led, he was convicted, and fined £3 4s (including expenses), or 14 days’ imprisonment.

TRADE NEWS – THE MINERS

We are informed that Mr. McKnight, of Plann Colliery, Kilmarnock, has come to an arrangement with his men, whereby they are to resume work today, at 8s 6d per day – a reduction of 1s.

We understand, however, that the ironstone miners at Plann, and the miners at Warwickhill, Stevenston, and Annick Lodge are now working at 7s 6d per day.

The strike in Kilmarnock and surrounding districts is believed to be nearing a termination.

AYRSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL REQUISITIONS

At a meeting of the Northern District Commissioners in Kilwinning yesterday on a review of the bank accounts at Ayr and Beith it was agreed that the following requisitions should be made on the county fund: -

Stevenston – water, £5; drainage, £1500; and lighting and scavenging, £110.

NOBEL’S DYNAMITE WORKS BOUNDARY FENCE

A proposed agreement regarding the question of fixing the position of the boundary fence of Nobel’s Dynamite Works on the north side of the River Irvine was submitted by the Nobel’s Company to a meeting of Irvine Harbour Trust last night.

The Trust, however, were of the unanimous opinion that the proposal was a very one-sided one, and decided to have nothing at all to do with it.

OF INTEREST TO PAWNBROKERS

In Kilmarnock Sheriff Small Debt Court an action of sequestration for rent was raised at the instance of Thomas S. Arnott, New Street, Stevenston, against William McCallum, New Street, Stevenston, and arising out of it there was a warrant to carry back certain articles of furniture which had been pledged in a pawn office by the defender. The pawnbroker appeared as a party in the case and pleaded that he had accepted the furniture in good faith and advanced money on it, and that under the Pawnbrokers’ Act he was entitled to retain it until it was redeemed.

The Sheriff in giving his judgment yesterday, said the question that really arose was whether the articles which had been pawned were recoverable by the landlord from the pawnbroker.

This appeared to be a question upon which there was not much light thrown by previous decisions, but after consideration of the terms of the Pawnbrokers’ Act he was of the opinion that the landlord was not entitled to claim the articles. The landlord was not the owner of them – he had only a right of hypothec over them – and he (the Sheriff) could find nothing to warrant him in coming to the conclusion that the pawnbroker was bound to give them up to the landlord.

He therefore decided in favour of the defender so far as the articles which had been pawned were concerned, and gave decree of sequestration as regards some other articles.

The pawnbroker was allowed expenses.

This committee met in Glasgow last night – Mr. James Brown presiding.

WILLIAM ROBB, Ardeer Thistle, appeared before the committee and had his suspension withdrawn.

ACCIDENT TO AN ELECTRICIAN

On Saturday forenoon WILLIAM EASTON, electrician in Ayrshire Foundry, Stevenston, met with an unfortunate accident which resulted in the loss of his right arm.

He had been repairing an electric lamp, and put his hand on a rail upon which a travelling crane runs. The crane was in motion, and came along and cut off his hand at the wrist and shattered the arm at the elbow.

Easton was removed to the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, where the arm was amputated.

He is married, and resides at Warner Place, Stevenston.
