MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost Donaldson presided at the monthly meeting last night.

From the minutes it appeared that the Shores and Improvements Committee had been waited on by a deputation from the Bathers’ Club with regard to the construction of a bathing pond at the North Pans.

Plans had been submitted showing a pond which it was estimated could be constructed for £400. The club offered a nominal rent of £25 for the exclusive use of the existing bathing house for its members and friends, or offered to take another house to be erected by the Council at the same rental.

After consideration the Council resolved to hold a special meeting on this issue, when the plans and offers could be discussed and a decision arrived at.

A letter was read from the National Telephone Company stating that they intended opening an exchange at Saltcoats, and expected to have it in operation by May.

SALTCOATS TEA SHOP

The premises in Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, occupied by the Ting Tong Tea Company were discovered to be on fire on Wednesday night shortly before ten. It is supposed that the outbreak took place near the window, as that part of the shop was soon in a blaze.

The Fire Brigade extinguished the fire, which had spread so quickly that the stock and fittings were burned out. An adjoining house was in some danger owing to the roof catching fire.

The Rev. McNab asked a blessing, and after supper returned thanks.

The cloth being removed the chairman in a very felicitous manner, gave the usual loyal and constitutional toasts, which were duly responded to.

[In a long addition to this newspaper article there is a description of toasts and replies thereto, including toasts to -

“Lord Eglinton, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Lord of the Manor”;
“Parents of the guests”;
“The Evangelical clergy of Scotland”;
“Farmers of the district, and Mr. Cunningham, of Chapelhill”;
“Town and trade of Saltcoats, with the health of Mr. Thomas Shaw, one of the oldest merchants”;

SALTCOATS TOWN COUNCIL CONFERENCE

Saltcoats Town Council had a conference with Doctor C. R. MacDonald, Medical Officer of Health for the County of Ayr, in connection with the recent outbreak of enteric fever.

The Clerk read a report from Doctor MacDonald stating that he did not think the Council had grasped the exact state of matters in connection with the outbreak at the farm. When once the case was removed to the hospital and the premises disinfected the danger was removed.

In the course of the conference it was pointed out that it was impossible to state the origin of the disease, as there was nothing about the farm to cause it. There was no danger of any more cases occurring, as the date of incubation had expired.

The Council afterwards agreed to write to the Local Government Board suggesting all cases arising at a dairy farm should be notified at once to the local authority.

Meekan - previous postings suggest, I think, that Doctor Eric's father was Doctor John MacDonald. I haven't come across anything to suggest that Dr. C. R. Macdonald, who was based at Ayr, had any Threetown connections.
