THE NEW YEAR

Ardrossan:
The annual treat to the children attending the Sabbath school was given at noon in the New Parish Church.

The streets were very quiet.

Sir,

THE WRECK OF THE LOVEN

Referring to advertisement intimating that the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, with the concurrence of the committee of the Ardrossan branch, have arranged to hold a public inquiry in the Town Hall, Ardrossan, on Friday first, 4th instant, commencing 10 a.m., and inviting those desirous of giving evidence that will be useful in the inquiry to leave their names and addresses with us, up till time of writing no party has called for this purpose. However, we do hope those individuals who were kind enough to publish letters through your valuable medium will yet volunteer to give evidence, as the Lifeboat Institution is anxious to have an exhaustive inquiry.

THE NEW YEAR

Ardrossan:
New Year’s Day was quiet here. In the early part of the day the weather was fine, but about midday rain began to fall, and continued more or less during the afternoon. Most of the shops were open all day but the streets were not busy.

SHIPPING CASUALTY

Ballywalter, January, 1 – The MARMION, of Glasgow, from Ardrossan to Truro (cargo, iron and dynamite), stranded at Ballyferris Point last night during thick fog, but floated off this morning, and proceeded on voyage, apparently undamaged.

THE NEW YEAR

Ardrossan:
Social meetings were held in connection with one or two of the Sabbath schools. In the Sabbath school of the New Parish Church the children made the annual contribution to the missions. A pantomime, with a localised version of “Cinderella” for subject, is running in the Assembly Hall. Children in the town were more free in the use of fireworks last night than for years.

SHOOTING COMPETITION - ARDROSSAN

On Monday afternoon the members of the 5th Battery of the1st Ayrshire and Galloway Artillery Volunteers had their annual shooting competition for money prizes &c. The day was fine, the entries were numerous, and the competition keen.

Winners:-

Bombardier Ralston, 29;
Corporal Alexander, 27; and
Corporal Fullerton, 25.

WIFE BEATING

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, WILLIAM KELLY, labourer, Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, pled guilty to having, on the 2nd instant, assaulted his wife by striking her on the head with a hearth-brush.

Having been previously convicted he was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment.

SNOWFALL - ARDROSSAN

Snow fell heavily in the early morning, and by daylight the ground was covered to a depth of four inches. Slight showers fell in the forenoon. About midday a mild thaw set in, and prevailed during the afternoon. Heavy clouds obscured the sky all day, but no more snow fell.

MERCHANTS’ HOLIDAY

Yesterday was observed as a holiday by the merchants of Ardrossan in lieu of New Year’s Day. The weather was exorable in the morning, rain falling copiously. About noon there was a change for the better but by evening the rain recommenced. A large number of people left the town notwithstanding.

5 JANUARY 1903

CHURCH RECTOR APPOINTED

The Rev. Alexander Copland was yesterday instituted Rector of St. Andrew’s Scottish Episcopal Church, Ardrossan, in succession to the late Rev. Mr. Mordue. The ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, and there was a large congregation.

When the ceremony instituting the rector was conducted the Bishop delivered an impressive address on the duties of clergymen and congregations towards each other.
