ARDROSSAN FREE PRESBYTERY

The Presbytery met in the hall of Ardrossan Free Church yesterday afternoon – Rev. W. S. McMillan, Kilmory, Arran, moderator.

Commissioners were heard in support of a call to the Rev. Mr. Sutherland, assistant, Campbeltown, by the congregation of Saltcoats English Church. The call is unanimous and was cordially sustained.

Rev. Mr. Lamont, minister-elect of Saltcoats Gaelic Church, was heard in trials. The trials were sustained, and the date of ordination was fixed.

THE NEW YEAR

Saltcoats:
A Hogmanay supper and free breakfast were given in the Christian Institute. A dinner was given in the Mission Coast Home. There was a children’s treat in the Town Hall in connection with the temperance party.

THE NEW YEAR

Saltcoats:
A good many people were abroad in the streets at midnight. The weather was fine on New Year’s Day. A united service was held in the forenoon in South Beach Church.

The usual dinner took place in the Mission Coast Home.

The League of the Cross had a soiree, presided over by Rev. P. Ryan.

A large audience assembled in the Town Hall at the festival promoted by the Temperance Union.

In the Christian Institute a free Hogmanay supper was given and a free breakfast for children.

THE NEW YEAR

Saltcoats:
The usual dinner took place in the Mission Coast Home.

Shops closed at 2 and public-houses generally at 5 p.m.

A children’s festival in connection with the temperance societies took place in the Town Hall. The Temperance Union held a great festival in the evening in the Town Hall.

The League of the Cross Society held a concert in their hall, presided over by the Rev. P. Ryan, at which medals were presented to members of five and ten years standing.

THE NEW YEAR

Saltcoats:
The weather was fine and a large number of visitors were in town. The streets were thronged. Licensed houses opened at ten and closed at five.

A free breakfast to children was given in the Christian Institute by the Y.M.C .A.

In the E.U.C. Church a united service was held at which local ministers took part.

Entertainments were given in the Town Hall - for children in the afternoon – and evening for adults – promoted by the Temperance Union. Rev. J. W. Purves presided at the evening meeting, and addresses were given by ex-Bailie Willoch, Glasgow, and Rev. A. Shaw, M.A., Glasgow. Some excellent solos and readings were given. There were also gramophone selections and a bioscope exhibition.

A social meeting took place in the Christian Institute in the evening.

The League of the Cross Society had a soiree and concert in their hall presided over by Rev. P. Ryan.
