THE NEW YEAR

Stevenston:
Watch night services were held. All works are closed for the holidays. A social meeting was given by the Good Templars. The streets were busy. A good many left the town to visit Glasgow.

Stevenston:
The Good Templars organised an entertainment in the Temperance Institute, which was well attended.

St. John’s League of the Cross Society had a social meeting at which Rev. Father Horgan presided, and an assembly followed.

CASUALTY OF WAR
2 JANUARY 1915

Died on service, Private WILLIAM HENDERSON, 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – brother of Mrs. Crawford, 1 Dynamite Road, Stevenston.

All the works were closed, and for the most part remain closed for a week. A considerable number of people were abroad, the day being bright and clear.
I'm assuming that when it says folk were 'abroad' it means they were out and about, not down in Benidorm. :lol:

3 JANUARY 1893

ACCIDENT AT SEA

While the S.S. DUKE OF PORTLAND, bound from Troon to Bilbao, in ballast, Captain Hardie, belonging to J. & A. Wyllie, was off Ailsa Craig on Saturday afternoon, a fireman named JOHN YOUNG, a native of Stevenston, fell down the stokehole, some 20 feet, and was seriously injured.

The steamer ran back to Troon and landed Young, who was attended to by Doctor Roxburgh, and sent to Kilmarnock Infirmary.

FOOTBALL - INTERNATIONAL COUNTY TRIAL

The International trial game between teams representing Renfrewshire and Ayrshire took place yesterday on the ground of Abercorn F.C., Underwood Park, Paisley.

The Ayrshire team was: -

Watt (Kilwinning Monkcastle); Allen (Kilmarnock Athletic); Anderson (Stevenston Thistle); McDonald (Beith); Edgar (Kilmarnock Athletic); James Campbell (Kilwinning Eglinton); Dolan (Annbank); Semmen (Stevenston Thistle); Gallocher (Galston); Donnelly (Annbank); and Ross (Kilwinning Monkcastle).

GLASGOW HERALD
4 JANUARY 1898

WIFE ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Mr. Henderson, Hon. Sheriff-Substitute, JOHN DEMPSY, miner, Auchenharvie Cottages, Stevenston, was charged with having, on the 31st ultimo and 1st instant, assaulted his wife by striking her three blows on the face, knocking her to the floor, and compressing her throat, and also committing a breach of the peace.

He pleaded guilty and was fined in £2 or 30 days’ imprisonment.

On Saturday the monthly medal competition took place on this course, when a good number took part. The weather was dry with a strong breeze.

Heys Medal – winner – Arthur Craig.
Robertson Medal – winner – John Gilfillan.
