27 NOVEMBER 1896
AN OLD OFFENDER
At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday JANET DALZIEL, hand-sewer, Schoolwell Street, Stevenston, pleaded guilty to having, on the 25th instant, within the house of James Burns, assaulted her daughter, Elizabeth Hamilton, dynamite worker, by dragging her by the hair of the head and kicking her on the body.
There being 34 convictions against the accused since 1876, she was sentenced to sixty days’ imprisonment.

Since 1875 she has been convicted on 32 occasions, and 15 times she has undergone a term of 60 days’ imprisonment.

The first and second ties in a nine-hole handicap tournament for prizes presented by Mr. Hugh Beckett, junior, were played off on Saturday.
FIRST ROUND RESULTS: - J. Laird scratched to Dunlop; Bailey beat Beckett; Buchanan beat Brand Scott; Crawford scratched to W. Stewart; Pultney scratched to Adam; McAllan beat Fleming; C. S. Campbell scratched to Roger; and Alexander Campbell beat Guthrie.
WINNERS OF SECOND ROUND: - J. L. Bailey, W. Stewart, R. Adam, and Alexander Campbell.
The remaining ties are to be played on 3rd and 10th December.

At Stevenston
A strong wind blew across the field, which interfered with the play. Kilbirnie had the wind in their favour in the first half, but did not score, though they were often before the Thistle goal. The home team made a good defence and scored 1 goal.
In the second half Kilbirnie scored two goals and Thistle added a second and equalised.
The game ended in a draw – 2 goals each.

EXTENSION OF CEMETERY
The Stevenston Parish Council have obtained power to extend the cemetery by taking in a piece of ground already enclosed within its wall. They are about to form walks and drives in this part, and an entrance gateway is to be built.
Mr. John Lawrie was the successful offeror for the work at £31 16s.

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Sheriff Anderson – MARY McINTYRE or ROSS, a widow residing with Charles McIntyre, a collier, in Grange Street, Stevenston, pleaded guilty to the theft of a plaid belonging to Mrs. McIntyre on the 29th November, and having been previously convicted, was sentenced to 60 days’ imprisonment.
