An official inquiry was held yesterday at Kilmarnock with respect to the loss of the brig MARY WILSON, of Ardrossan, on Seal Island, near Oronsay, on the morning of 28 October last.

The first witness was JOHN ANDERSON, who stated that he had been the master of the MARY WILSON from 14 March till 20 October, 1887. He considered the vessel seaworthy and the sails sufficient for the passage from Limerick to Ardrossan.
On 20 October last he handed over the charge of the vessel to Captain Cowie, leaving on board a patent log and a chart of the west coast of Ireland belonging to himself.
JOHN COWIE, the next witness, stated that he held a master’s certificate of competency, and had sailed as a master mariner since 1844, both in foreign and coastal trade.
Several other witnesses were examined and the Court was adjourned till today, when the agent for the Board of Trade will ask the Court to give judgment on the various points raised in the inquiry.

BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY AT KILMARNOCK
The Board of Trade inquiry into the loss of the sailing vessel MARY WILSON, of Ardrossan, on Seal Island, on the West Coast of Scotland, on the 28th October, was concluded yesterday.
The Court held that the primary cause of the stranding of the vessel was the master’s mistake in supposing Tory light to be Arranmore light, but in the whole circumstances did not think it necessary to deal with his certificate.
