VESSEL ASHORE NEAR ARDROSSAN

About four o’clock on Saturday morning the schooner MARGARET MITCHELL, of Tarbert, light, bound for Ardrossan, ran the south-western point of the Horse Island, close to the pier. A strong breeze was blowing from the south-west at the time.

The captain reports that it was dark, and he did not sight land until a few moments before the vessel struck, and in the heavy swell she nearly rolled over.

Early in the morning the pilots saw the stranded vessel, and reported it to the harbourmaster, who immediately proceeded to the spot with the tug LORD ELGIN and a pilot boat. They found the vessel lying dry on a reef of rocks with the keel broken and rudder unshipped.

The crew, with their effects, were brought ashore.

The tug with towlines on board, again put off to the schooner. After standing by for some time, it was found impossible to get ropes to the vessel, as the sea was breaking heavily over the reefs to windward, and all hope of towing her off was abandoned, as wind and sea increased rapidly.

Yesterday the vessel was driven further on the rocks and she will probably go to pieces.

CHARGE OF SWINDLING AGAINST A WOMAN

A young woman, who is supposed to have carried on an extensive series of swindling transactions with shopkeepers in various points of the country, was apprehended yesterday afternoon at Kilmarnock Railway Station by Captain Willison, of the burgh police.

A description of her had been circulated, and shopkeepers had been warned some time ago, so that her efforts in Kilmarnock were ineffectual, and notice given to the police by merchants from whom she endeavoured to obtain goods led to her apprehension.

She is wanted, it is said, in Rutherglen, Hamilton, Falkirk, Gourock, Port Glasgow, Paisley, Ardrossan, and Ayr, for offences alleged to have been committed over a period of about six weeks.

In Falkirk it is understood she obtained a violin, and in other places gold watches and chains, on several pretences, which were found to be false.

In Ardrossan she is alleged to have attempted to get possession of a sealskin jacket valued at £35, but to have failed.

She is charged with the theft of an opera-glass from a house where she had taken lodgings.

After her apprehension she was seized with a fit.

She gives the name CLARA McGREGOR, and states that she is the daughter of an engine-fitter at Govan. She is of a prepossessing appearance, well dressed, and apparently about 38 years of age.

She was removed to Ayr.

THEFT

At Ardrossan Burgh Court on Saturday morning a donkeyman on board a steamer was charged with having, on the previous day, stolen a double-breasted jacket, value 25s, from a draper’s shop in Princes Street.

He pleaded guilty, asserting that he was the worse of liquor when he committed the theft.

It appears that accused, who is a Spaniard went into the shop on Friday morning about ten o’clock, and on being shown the jacket offered 10s for it. The offer was refused, and he left the shop.

About four o’clock in the afternoon the jacket was discovered to have been stolen. The police were informed, and the jacket was found in possession of accused on board the steamer.

A fine of 20s or 14 days’ imprisonment was imposed. The fine was paid.

BOYS SENT TO REFORMATORY

At Ardrossan Burgh Court yesterday morning – before Provost Young and Bailie Anderson – Alexander Brown, (12), John Daly, (10), and John Brown, (9), were charged with stealing three pairs of woollen pants from a hamper in a waggon in the goods yard of the Glasgow & South-Western station.

Alexander Brown pleaded not guilty, the others guilty.

The evidence showed that the theft had been committed on Sunday week, and that the stationmaster and a goods porter saw the boys on Monday afternoon taking the stolen goods from a hiding place on the Cannon Hill.

John Brown confessed that he and John Daly had pilfered the pants, and afterwards told his brother, who accompanied them when they went back to the place where they were hidden.

The lad Alexander Brown was dismissed. John Brown and John Daly were sentenced to 10 days’ imprisonment, thereafter to be detained in a reformatory school for five years.
