LICENSING COURT AT SALTCOATS

There were two applications for new premises.

E. J. Sieger, junior, applied for a hotel license for premises in Montgomerie Street, Ardrossan.

After hearing Mr. Laing, advocate, in support of the application, and Messrs Emslie and McCracken, writers, against it, the Court refused the license.

Archibald Watson, Stanley Place, Saltcoats, applied for a grocer’s licence, and the voting being equal, the application was not granted.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

The Commissioners had under consideration the question of widening and improvements of Dockhead Street, the principal thoroughfare in the town.

Mr. Thomson, burgh surveyor, submitted a plan of the ground and buildings on the north side of Dockhead Street, between the Bank of Scotland and Green Street, and also a report showing the measurements, rental, and probable purchase prices of the properties and resale of the ground, with other information.

After careful consideration of the plan and reports, Mr. Kerr moved that the building line be fixed, beginning at the Bank of Scotland, thence eastwards as far as the gable between the properties of Mr. R. C. Orr and Mr. Cummock, and thence on a curve to the east end of the steading on which Mr. Walker, chemist, proposes to build, and from thence to the corner of Dockhead Street and Green Street, in line with the existing building, No. 17, and that all buildings when taken down in whole or in part to be altered or rebuilt be set back to said line.

Mr. Christie seconded the motion.

Mr. Smith moved that the Commissioners purchase the properties in the section of Dockhead Street referred to, take down the buildings, widen the street, erect new buildings, and let or sell the same. He submitted figures to show that his proposal could be carried out without adding to the taxation of the ratepayers.

Mr. Smith’s motion was not seconded, and Mr. Kerr’s was declared carried.

It was afterwards agreed to grant a warrant for the building proposed to be erected by Mr. Walker, chemist, but the plan to be altered, as the building as proposed would project 2 feet 3 inches at the west gable beyond the building line of the street.

VACANCY IN SALTCOATS FREE CHURCH

At a congregational meeting on Monday night – Rev. J. Livingstone, moderator of the session, presiding – a candidate was proposed, but as the voting for and against was nearly equal the name was dropped.

It was then moved by Mr. Galloway that a deputation wait on the Presbytery to ask them to agree to a call to Rev. Mr. Mathieson, of Blair Atholl, who had received the largest number of votes from the congregation.

An amendment was proposed by Mr. H. Arnott that new candidates be heard.

The motion was carried by 123 votes to 42 for the amendment.

Commissioners were appointed to represent both parties at the Presbytery.

LICENSING COURT AT SALTCOATS

The Justices for Saltcoats District met yesterday in the Town Hall - Provost Hogarth, presiding.

David Graham applied for a public-house license for new premises in Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, but the application was refused by a majority of five to one.

Hugh McPherson, who holds a license for a public-house in harbour street, Saltcoats, applied for a license for extension of premises. The application was granted.

Renewal of transferred certificates were granted to Miss Dick, Stevenston; Mrs. Clark, Railway Hotel, Ardrossan; and Mr. Goodwin, Crown Hotel, Saltcoats.

For three seats only three candidates were nominated, as follows: - P. W. Hunter, Sidney Street; Robert Fleck, Caledonia Road; and S. B. Miller, Hamilton Street.

There will be no poll.

The first named has been re-elected; the other two are new members.

LICENSING COURT AT SALTCOATS

At this Court – Mr. A. Guthrie presiding – Robert McMillan, Barrhead, applied for a grocer’s license for new premises in Galloway Place, Saltcoats. Mr. Robert Fleck and Rev. J. D. Taylor were heard in support of objectors resident in the locality, and Mr. Gray, writer, Ardrossan, supported the application.

Mr. Brown moved that the license be granted, but the motion was not seconded.

The license was refused on the motion of Provost Smith.

Archibald Watson, grocer, applied for a porter and ale license for premises in Stanley Place. The application was refused by a majority of three to two.

Transfers were granted to John Kerr, public-house. Glasgow Street, Ardrossan; John McBurney, Saracen’s Head Hotel, Saltcoats; and William Henry McCutcheon, public-house, Dockhead Street, Saltcoats.
