DEATH

GRAHAM: At Oak Bank Cottage, Eglinton Street, Saltcoats, on the 10th instant, James Stephen Graham, boot and shoe maker, in his 65th year.

FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT

Yesterday forenoon, WILLIAM REID, surfaceman, was employed working on the line a short distance from Canal Street Bridge, Saltcoats, on the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway.

A goods train was approaching on the up-line on which Reid was working, and from the opposite direction a passenger train was coming on the down-line. Before Reid managed to step into the six-foot way he was caught by the engine of the goods train, and sustained a compound fracture of the leg.

He was taken to Saltcoats Station, where Dr. McClymont attended to him, and afterwards accompanied him by special train to Glasgow for treatment at the Royal Infirmary.

When Barrmill was reached the unfortunate man succumbed to his injuries.

Deceased was about 44 years of age, and leaves a wife but no family.

MUNICIPAL MEETING - SALTCOATS

The monthly meeting of Police Commissioners was held on Monday night – Provost McIsaac presiding.

The Works Committee recommended that the Eglinton Street drainage should be carried along the new road to Winton Circus, and emptied at the North Pans outlet, and thus remove the principal cause of nuisance occasioned by the outlet at Windmill Street.

The Commissioners who retire in November are Bailies Kinnear and Campbell and Commissioner Glen.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost McIsaac presiding.

Mr. D. Scott was appointed keeper of the slaughter-house.

It was agreed that those parties who had not yet formed pavements opposite their properties should be required to do so within one week.

Mr. Hunter moved that the Glasgow & South-Western Railway be requested to run early trains for workers from Saltcoats to Stevenston and Ardrossan.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost McIsaac presiding.

A deputation appeared from the colliers on strike requesting assistance for the wives and families of the colliers on strike, several of whom are stated to be in a very destitute condition.

The matter was fully discussed, but the meeting decided that they could not apply the rates for such a purpose.

The retiring members are Bailie Miller, Commissioners Dunlop and T. Miller.

NAVAL AWARDS TO SCOTS

The following naval awards were announced last night.

For courage, resolution, and skill in anti-U-boat operations: -

Distinguished Service Medal to Able Seaman HENRY McILROY, Ardrossan.

Captain WILLIAM SHANNON, OBE, of Woodriffe, Saltcoats, is among those commended for brave conduct when their ships encountered enemy ships, submarines, aircrafts, or mines.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

At the monthly meeting of the Police Commissioners – Provost McIsaac presiding – a memorial was read from the ratepayers at the junction of Hamilton Street and Dockhead Street, complaining of the annoyance on account of the Salvation Army meetings there.

The matter was continued for further consideration.

On the recommendation of the Magistrates, it was agreed to increase the fiscal’s salary £5 per annum from May last.
