ARDROSSAN BOWLING CLUB COMPETITIONS

This week several of the competitions which have enjoyed the attention of the members of the Ardrossan Bowling Club during the season were brought to an issue, and as will be observed from the results the prizes fell to the lot of three of the senior members – all skips.

Mr. William Comrie is the winner of the president’s prize. The vice-president’s prize fell to Mr. William Tannock, and the championship prize, which may be termed the blue ribbon of the club, becomes the property of Mr. David Gillies.

ARDROSSAN – THE HOSPITAL

At a meeting of the Joint-Committee of Management it was reported that the Northern District County Council had settled the accounts rendered to them, and which for some time were in dispute.

Dr. Brown, medical officer, reported that till the beginning of August the hospital had been unoccupied for the year past, but that since the month commenced four patients had been admitted, all suffering from enteric fever.

Three patients were removed from Montgomerie Lane and Barr Lane, Ardrossan, and their dwelling-houses were all within an area of 100 yards.

OLD OFFENDER SMARTLY DEALT WITH

At Ardrossan Burgh Court yesterday DAVID TRODDEN , labourer, Princes Lane, a man about 25 years of age, and having 23 previous convictions recorded against him, was convicted on a charge of breach of the peace, and sentenced to pay a fine of 30s or suffer one month’s imprisonment.

HEAVY SENTENCES FOR THIMBLE-RIGGING

At Ardrossan Burgh Court yesterday – before Provost Young – PATRICK McDONNELL, CHARLES McGINNESS, MICHAEL HYLAND, and THOMAS COSGROVE, all dealers, of no fixed residence, were charged with exhibiting three thimbles and a pea on board the steamship ADDER on the way from Belfast on Wednesday night in order to induce parties to join the game known as “thimble-rigging,”

They were further charged with conning and cheating, in the game referred to, James McCann, cab driver, Thistle Street, Glasgow, of £1 3s; James Marshall, labourer, £2 4s; and William McGhee, wine and spirit merchant, Airdrie, of 2s 6d.

O’Donnell pleaded guilty, the others not guilty. Cosgrove was defended by Mr. Arthur Craig, solicitor.

McCann, the first witness for the prosecution, said he was at Belfast on Wednesday, and came over on the steamer ADDER. He saw all that accused did on board. About three-quarters of an hour after the steamer left Belfast, O’Donnell produced a white board, which he held on his knee. He had also three thimbles and a pea. The game was to back for any sum on any thimble as having the pea under it. When O’Donnell feigned to be looking away, Cosgrove lifted one of the thimbles to show that the pea was not there, and another man, who had got off, lifted another of the thimbles to show that the pea was not there. Witness then put £3 on the remaining thimble, and when it was lifted there was no pea under it.

The other victims also gave evidence.

Sergeant Allan stated that he had men awaiting the arrival of the ADDER on Wednesday in consequence of information from Belfast that pickpockets were on board. The witnesses accosted him shortly after the steamer touched the pier, and pointed out the accused.

He believed there were others of the gang, but accused were the only ones pointed out.

Provost Young sentenced each to 30 days’ imprisonment, and O’Donnell to repay £3 2s, or suffer another 30 days.

ARDROSSAN FREE CHURCH BAZAAR

The bazaar held at Ardrossan in aid of the Free Church was opened on Saturday by Mr. Joseph Russell, Port Glasgow. Mr. Russell was introduced by Provost Young, Ardrossan, who presided.

The drawings have amounted to £436.

The assessments for the ensuing year were intimated, gas and water to be continued without alteration, and progress was reported with the harbour and dock works.

ARDROSSAN – THE PAROCHIAL HOSPITAL

The dispute between the Ardrossan Parish Council and the Local Authority of Saltcoats Burgh regarding the sale of the parish hospital has now been ended, the Parish Council agreeing to the offer of the Saltcoats authorities to pay their share of the purchase price, with 3 per cent interest.

These teams on Friday evening played a return match on the green of the former. The turf was heavy owing to the rain that fell during the day.

Result: - Ardrossan, 120; Ardeer, 89.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

Provost Young Presiding.

Communication was submitted from the Local Government Board giving the Board’s decision as to the proportions payable by the Local Authorities of Ardrossan and Saltcoats for the furnishing, equipping, &c., of the joint hospital.

The allocation is as follows: - Ardrossan Local Authority, 13/25ths; Saltcoats Local Authority, 12/25ths.

As to the question of proportion of representation on the board of management, the Local Government Board did not think the settlement of this question was within the scale of their powers, and was rather a matter to be adjusted by the two local bodies. The Board, however, suggested that equal representation would be the fairest arrangement.

The document was allowed to lie on the table for a month.

OPENING OF NEW LAWN TENNIS COURTS

The formal opening of new lawn tennis courts at Johnstone took place on Saturday. The courts and a bowling green which are in the same enclosure cost over £1200. Unfortunately the weather was unpropitious.

The game was between Johnstone and Ardrossan.
