Now that the coasting season has fairly commenced, and with great competition that exists this season among steamboat companies – greater that has ever been before – it is well, I think, that the travelling public should take a lesson in time, and be carefully on their card as to safety.

We all know the nasty mishaps that took place last year between Ardrossan and Brodick (not speaking of Lochfyne) in one way or another, and I would not like to see a repetition of these before the season comes to a close.

It may be gratifying to the respective companies to know that on a Monday morning lately the steamer belonging to A left Brodick Pier three minutes later and the steamer belonging to B, and, notwithstanding this, A steamer arrived at exactly the same time at Ardrossan as B steamer; but it is to be considered, on the other hand, that both steamers were running side by side with each other nearly all the way to Ardrossan at a high pressure of steam, having each a large complement of passengers, whose lives, I think, were somewhat endangered should anything have taken place.

I do hope the proper authorities will see to this at once, and if need be alter the hour of sailings.

ARDROSSAN – THE SALE OF THE PARISH HOSPITAL

At the monthly meeting of Ardrossan Parish Council, held in the Town Hall, Ardrossan, on Tuesday evening, a letter was read from the agent of the Council engaged in the sale of the hospital to the two burghs of Ardrossan and Saltcoats jointly, in which it was stated that the burghs were willing to complete the purchase of the hospital, provided that the claim of interest on the purchase price, since the purchase was resolved upon some three years ago, should be departed from. Interest was demanded at the rate of 5 per cent.

The Council deemed the question one of importance, in so far as the interests of the landward part of the parish of Ardrossan and part of Stevenston parish within the burgh of Saltcoats were concerned.

It was agreed by a majority, to reduce the interest claimed to 3 per cent.

Daniel could have survived.

Brian,

I would need to check it again but I don't think Daniel was on the passenger list of the Lusitania. Somehow I think he was on the other side of the Atlantic with maybe his family going to join him. Subsequent intimations in the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald have him resident in Ronald, Washington (State), USA.

HAMILTON: At 127 Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, on the 13th instant, after a long and painful illness borne with great patience, aged 14 years and 5 months, Jane Brodie, eldest daughter of William and Louisa Hamilton.

THEFT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday two young labourers about 18 years of age – MICHAEL MURRAY, Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, and JOHN JOHNSTONE, with no fixed residence – pleaded guilty to the theft of 3¾ cwt. of metal from Ardrossan ‘Old’ Shipyard between the 7th and the 12th instant.

Both had been previously convicted and inmates of a reformatory. They were sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

The Commissioners agreed to have a water supply put into the harbour and dock district immediately, and the vessels at the new steamboat berth will get a supply through Messrs Lucas & Aird’s meter per agreement.

The sanitary inspector’s report showed the town to be in a good sanitary condition, one house being complained of only as in a bad sanitary condition – that is “Happy Land,” on the harbour, which one night lately had 45 occupants. It was remitted to the Works Committee to see what could be done with it.

Mr. Crawford, stationer, was granted five years’ lease of his shop in Town’s building.

The expense for upkeep of parish hospital for year had been £79 11s 9d to be allocated between the three districts sharing its benefits.

During the months of June, July, and August, the butchers in Ardrossan are to be allowed to kill animals up to 8 p.m., and as early as three o’clock on Monday mornings.

SHIPPING CASUALTY

Yesterday afternoon the steel barque GLENESK, owned by Mr. W. O. Taylor, Dundee, (Captain James S. Bailie, Ardrossan, master), arrived at Ardrossan in tow of the Glasgow tug NEPTUNE.

The GLENESK left Taltal, Chile, on 8th January with a cargo of about 2200 tons nitrates for Nobel’s Explosives Company, Ardeer. She encountered terrible weather.

On 26th April, in a heavy storm, the main and mizzen topmasts, and all gear above, were carried away, the fore-topgallant yard and spanker gaff sprung, and slight damage done to bulwarks.
