James Kelman's book is one of my all time favourites. It's about a man called Sammy who had his wallet and new shoes stolen, went blind, got himself arrested......and that's just the start of his troubles.
A word of warning: it's pure Glaswegian so words like f*** appear a few (hundred?) times in it. Even so, Kelman won the 1994 Booker Prize.
