I appreciate that some of these sites are Irish but it is surprising where our ancestors came from and a lot of Scots came over in the dark days of the Irish famine.
I have been researching my family tree now for some time and a lot of these sites have been very useful to me.

Ancestry.com does from time to time offer a free period and you may get a 3 day freebee when signing up?

Genesreunited costs £7.50 per year but very very useful as well.

The Mormons site (http://www.familysearch.org/) has a huge database and is open to all without strings..

There are a few Scottish sites listed as well to get you started.

Good hunting!
