GLASGOW MAN DROWNED AT SALTCOATS

A sad accident occurred at Saltcoats yesterday morning, when a man was drowned in sight of his wife.

JAMES BURNS and his wife, with another married couple who were lodging in the same house in Quay Street, went out about four in the morning to wade on the sea shore at the White Rocks at East Beach. Burns took off his clothes to bathe, and after he was out a short distance he disappeared. Mr and Mrs Newall, who were of the party, waded out, and not finding Burns, they raised an alarm.

A young man named William Wilson, carpenter, residing in Douglas Street, Partick, was roused from his lodgings, and running down to the shore, after a search, found Burns lying in about two feet of water and brought the body ashore.

Medical assistance was sent for, and Dr. McClymont arrived, but his efforts to restore animation were without avail. It is supposed that Burns was seized with cramp, the morning being very cold.

Deceased was a shoemaker, and resided at 10 Anfield Street, off Gallowgate, Glasgow. He leaves a wife and two of a family. They had gone to Saltcoats on Saturday, and were to return home today.

ANNIVERSARY SERVICES

On Sabbath last anniversary services were held in the West U.P. Church here, the Rev. Dr. Black, of Wellington Street, U.P.Church, Glasgow, officiating forenoon and evening; and the Rev. George Fairgrieve, minister of the congregation, in the afternoon. On this occasion, a special effort was made to clear off the remaining debt of the church and manse, the former having been erected six years ago at a cost of £2000, and the latter a year thereafter at a cost of £900. This effort was happily realised; and at the close of the evening service, Mr. Fairgrieve thanked the congregation for their continuous liberality, and congratulated them on the accomplishment of their object.

He further stated that they had been much indebted to many kind friends, and especially to Mr.William Elles, London (son of the former minister) whose handsome gift amounted to £400.
