Kilwinning old barber shop

Post by gwennypenny »

Hello everyone
My grandfather owned a barber shop I've been told
His shop was his own and it was called James Cowan barber
It was ON. A street a Main Street in kilwinning
Red and gold sign
1940s 1950s
How might I see an old photos of this barber shop he apparently was very very well known gift for gab and people went into gab more or less

Robert Cowan owns Papingo the gents' hairdressers in Main Street facing the start of the Woodwynd. Robert lives in Kilwinning on the opposite side of the Abbey grounds from Papingo's. PM me for contact details.

edit- There was a Barbers shop on the left of the opening to the Church. Can't be sure but I think it was Red with Gold lettering.

30 Main Street is next to the Buffs Tavern, possible now the Rainbow Chinese Carry-Out but Papingo's is on the other side further up the town next to Revel's Pub.

Got this in an e-mail:
There were two barbers shops in Kilwinning main street, one each side of the Abbey Church gates. As you stand in the main street looking at the church gates the shop on the left was John Reids and on the right as far as i can remember was Jock Cowans, this was his nick name.

gwennypenny,
Just recieved a message from one of my school mates who still lives in kilwinning,he reckons John Cowan had the barbers shop that was next to the Kingsway Bar,now known as the Burns Tavern.
He said he went to the barbers yesterday for a hair cut, the barber was Robert Cowan who owns The Papingo, unfortunately he does,nt know if John & Robert are related.
As far as he knows Robert has a brother who lives down here in Australia,.
Hopefully my contacts in Kilwinning may come up with more information for you. I am sure they will do their best.
